Fever grips the city

BANGALORE: The city seems to be really sick. While more positive cases of H1N1 flu were reported, people from many parts of Bangalore complained of fever. Worse, suspected cases of malaria and dengue are increasing, with hospitals reporting more number of patients with the symptoms.
Viral fever
Nearly 400 out-patients were treated at a hospital in Govindapura near K G Halli. District health officer B T Shivaram said viral fever cases have increased, especially in KavalByrasandra and K G Halli.
"With no proper sanitary maintenance system in this rainy season, the situation has worsened in these areas. Sporadic cases of chikungunya have been detected too," said Shivaram.
According to BBMP chief health officer L T Gayathri, 15 out of 400 patients were diagnosed with fever. "Two blood samples have been sent to the National Institute of Virology," she said.
Due to water stagnation, sanitary leakage and overflowing drains, the city is at risk of seeing a chikungunya outbreak.
Dengue and malaria
Although BBMP officials deny cases of dengue and malaria, one malaria and three dengue cases were reported from BGS Global Hospital in the past two days. Of the three, two dengue cases were reported from Kengeri and one from South Bangalore. The malaria-affected person is a KSRTC driver from Chanapatna. His condition is stable now, doctors said.

BBMP deputy health commissioner Venkateshappa said he's unaware of the increasing cases of viral fever. "I don't know about the sporadic cases of dengue, chikungunya and malaria as well. I'm into administration. Please contact the BBMP chief health officer," Venkateshappa said.
