Dhaka, July 29 : About 1,000 cases of dengue have been reported so far this year in Bangladesh, resulting in the deaths of eight people in capital Dhaka.
Abdur Rahim of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) told Xinhua news agency on Sunday that 22 fresh cases of dengue were reported from Dhaka, taking the total number of confirmed cases till July 28 this year in the city to 992.

He said eight people died in Dhaka due to dengue since January...

6,158 dengue patients admitted to hospitals this year

A total of 6,158 dengue patients have been admitted in different hospitals across the country, according to Public Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room, reports BSS.

?So far, we received information about more than 6,158 dengue cases from different hospitals, where most of them are from the capital and of them 16 people died,? Dr Ayesha of Public Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room told BSS...

The graphs look chilling. A red line sharply shooting north, crossing a purple, a yellow, a blue and a green.

?That's what dengue looks like this year,? said Dr Ayesha Akhter, in-charge of disease control room at the directorate of health, pointing to the red line representing the number of patients this year.

It's a record 6,479 as of Wednesday since January, with three more months of the year to go.

?Look at last year. A much lower record,? she said and pointed to the black line. Only 2,769 patients took treatment at hospitals.

And 2014, a blue line, looks so meek compared with the figure this year. Just 375 patients were admitted to hospitals that year.

If this is not bad enough, then consider the fact that this year a new variety of dengue virus, called serotype 3, has appeared for the first time in Bangladesh...

According to sources at the Health Emergency and Control Room of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), 39 new patients were hospitalized in Dhaka on Thursday, raising the total number of those infected by the mosquito-borne disease this year to 6,694

Bangladesh has suffered more deaths from dengue fever in 2018 than in any other year since records began at the turn of this century.

According to sources at the Health Emergency and Control Room of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), 39 new patients were hospitalized in Dhaka on Thursday, raising the total number of those infected by the mosquito-borne disease this year to 6,694.

The previous highest was the 6,232 cases confirmed in 2002...

Dengue season usually begins with June?s monsoon rains in Dhaka. An unavoidable fact of life, it proves deadly to a handful of unfortunate victims but by September it has mostly disappeared from the Bangladeshi capital.

But this year the disease has seen more than a tripling of numbers of recorded cases in the city ? alongside a lengthening of its season.

And the explosion is being reported in other countries too. Dengue, a mosquito-borne viral disease, has been spreading rapidly in the past few years.

By mid-October, almost 7,450 cases of dengue had been reported in Bangladesh and 17 deaths (pdf), making it the deadliest year since the first recorded epidemic in 2000.

Last year, 68 dengue cases were recorded in Dhaka in the first four months, compared with 254 this year.

Researchers believe the true numbers are much higher. There are four strains of dengue, including the most life-threatening, hemorrhagic dengue. But only patients with severe cases end up in hospitals, from where the government collects data...
