BELMOPAN - The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries is conducting a series of national public presentations geared at the small and backyard poultry producers to inform them about Avian Influenza and its possible effects on the Belize poultry industry and human health.

This exercise is being carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the Belize Poultry Association, the Belize Agricultural Health Authority, the International Regional Organization for Plant and Animal Health, and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture

The first in this series was held last Friday, March 9, 2007 at the Methodist Primary School Conference Room in Corozal Town.

Presentations included an overview of the Belize poultry industry, Biosecurity/Good Management Practices, the Surveillance program in Belize, Overview of Influenza Pandemic, and a DVD presentation on Best Poultry Management Practices.

Hon. Valdemar Castillo, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and Corozal North Area Representative, officially opened the session. Forty nine participants attended, including teachers, nurses, students, village chairmen, extension officers, farmers, and rural development officers.

At the present moment, Belize is free of Avian Influenza.
