Bernard Matthews chief's mysterious departure

The UK chief executive of crisis-hit turkey producer Bernard Matthews has left the business, the company said yesterday.

Bart Dalla Mura had been given the task of boosting the fortunes of the Norfolk-based firm.

The company had been hit by bird flu ? about 159,000 turkeys were culled at its Suffolk farm to prevent the spread of the H5N1 virus.

It has also faced allegations of cruelty, and a row over the fat content of Turkey Twizzlers.

A spokeswoman for Bernard Matthews said: "Bernard Matthews can confirm the UK chief executive officer, Bart Dalla Mura, has left the company. We wish to thank him for his contribution to the business and we wish him well for the future."

The spokeswoman would not comment on the reasons for the departure of Mr Dalla Mura, who had become the public face of the company in media interviews.
