A mystery disease has claimed 13 lives in Suguali panchayat in Motihari district even as more patients with symptoms of the disease reported ill.

Doctors in the district are baffled by the spate of deaths of patients who complained of sore throat followed by nausea. In the past two days, nine people died and three were rushed to Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) last night in a critical condition. All three patients died on their way to Patna. The 13th patient died on Tuesday.

More cases pour in

Doctors claimed that a number of victims with similar symptoms are pouring in from other villages, too. In a bid to understand the cause of the deaths, a team of doctors conducted autopsy on people who died on Tuesday morning.

Patna/Motihari, Nov. 25: At least nine people, including three women, have died of a mystery disease at Bahurupiya in East Champaran district’s Sagauli nagar panchayat, around 180 km northwest of Patna, in the past 18 hours.

Only eight deaths were officially confirmed. Two deaths occurred on Saturday night but the trend was noticed after a series of deaths from 3pm on Sunday till 9am today. The age of the victims ranged from 35 to 70 years. Four of the seriously ill have been referred to Motihari Sadar Hospital. One more person, Jaynarayan Patel was rushed there at 6 pm today. Among the dead are Jagdish Patel (65), Badami Devi (70), Rameshwar Prasad Sah (65), Kanhai Mahto (35), Tapi alias Baro Mahto (40), Rambha Devi (35), Madan Mahto (60), Rita Devi (35) and Radhe Mahto (55). Rita, Baro and Rambha belong to one family and Jagdish and Bedami to another.

Deceased Rameshwar Prasad Sah’s son Mangal Mahto told officials on Monday that his father was drunk when he returned home on Saturday night. “He complained of vomiting, itching and stomach pain.” They took him to hospital where he died on Monday. Other relatives said most victims complained of excess sweating, nausea and vomiting, headache and breathlessness. “They died in 15-20 minutes,” a relative told the team.

Motihari, Nov 26 2013: Eleven persons have died due to a mysterious disease in Sugauli near Bahurupia in East Champaran district in the past 24 hours.



The bodies of the victims have been sent for post-mortem. District authorities are trying to find out the main cause of deaths.

Details are awaited. Nine persons died in different families on Monday, while two succumbed early Tuesday morning, police said.

The state health department has been alerted.

MOTIHARI/PATNA: One more person has died, taking the toll to 10, due to a 'mysterious' disease in Sugauli Nagar Panchayat in east Champaran district, police said today.

35-year-old Jainarayan Raut succumbed at his home last night, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) P K Mandal said.

An autopsy was carried out, but it failed to specify the cause of Raut's death, he said.

Impure water theory ruled out

A preliminary report has ruled out consumption of contaminated water as the cause behind the death of 11 people at Sugauli in East Champaran district, around 180km northwest of Patna.

Health department principal secretary Deepak Kumar said the samples of water were collected from the handpumps of the affected localities and sent to the laboratory for test. ?The report has outright rejected contamination in the water, which was primarily suspected to be the reason behind the death,? he told The Telegraph.

The principal secretary, however, said the report of the viscera examination would be available to the department by Friday. ?The viscera examination report would throw light on the cause of the death of the victims,? he said, adding that the post-mortem report, however, failed to establish the reason behind the death.

On the other hand, the post-mortem on another victim hailing from neighbouring Bahuarva village under the jurisdiction of Majaulia police station in West Champaran confirmed the death of one Vinod Das owing to consumption of spurious liquor.

Das (28) died on Sunday, the day seven deaths were reported from Phulwaria panchayat and parts of nagar panchayats under Sugauli sub-division in East Champaran district.

A team of excise department officials conducted raids at several places and detained five persons on the charge of selling illicit liquor.

East Champaran DDC Nagendra Singh preferred to wait for the FSL reports saying that the district administration is keeping a strict vigil. A day earlier, civil surgeon Dr Mira Verma, while ruling out the deaths being an epidemic, feared the tragedy to be some kind of poisoning. Dr Sameer Kumar, who treated the victims at the Sugauli PHC held a similar view: "It seems to be the result of contaminated food mixed with unknown pesticide...probably organo phosphorous."

"The symptoms..acute stomach pain, vomiting, sore throat and blinding experience...are typical of poisoning by methyl alcohol," Dr Sanjay Jaiswal, post graduate in medicine and West Champaran MP told TOI after visiting the victims in his constituency and alleged that the local police station presides over a thriving illicit liqour trade.
