Bird flu alert as migratory birds arrive in Bhitarkanika
Kendrapara, Nov 4 : The Bhitarkanika National Park authorities have alerted the people residing close to the Park to take precautionary measure against bird flu following the arrival of winter migratory birds.
Rajnagar Mangrove Forest Division DFO Manoj Kumar Mohapatra said the winter feathered-guests have started arriving in Bhitarkanika. He asked the people to take precautionary measure as the winter guests might have carried H5N1 virus.
Mr Mohapatra said the Chief District Veterinary Officer (CDVO) of Kendrapada will visit the National Park very shortly to conduct sample tests of the winter avian guests to ascertain whether these migratory birds were affected with flu virus.
The forest officials have been keeping a close watch on the winged visitors. Bird species like sand piper, plover, ducks, goose, heron, cormorants, spoon bill, egrate, have started thronging in the branches of mangroves trees in the dense of Bhitarkanika park areas at Satabhaya, Barunei Muhana ,Chataka, Praharajpur, Bagagahan and Raitapatia, official sources said Every year during the last week of October and the first week of November various types of winter migratory as well as residential bird species throng the Bhitarkanika park for the nesting and breeding.
An estimated 1,05,949 birds of 74 types including migratory feathered guests and residential avian species thronged the Bhitarkanika National Park last year for nesting and breeding.
