Brasil is free of influenza epidemic, says Health Minister

June 17, 2010, 21:12 Brasilia, June 17 (PL) Health Minister Jose Gomes Temporao said today that Brazil is free from an epidemic of influenza A (H1N1), thanks to vaccination against the illness of 81 million major risk groups.
At a press conference in Beijing on the results of the national immunization campaign against influenza A, Gomes Temporao exalted than that amount of vaccine represents 88 percent of 92 million Brazilians covered by those groups at risk.
Thus, the government in excess the 80 percent goal set before the campaign, and represents the number of immunized 42 percent of the 190 million people of this country.
The minister said that figure places Brazil in the first place worldwide in immunization against influenza A. He reiterated that the immunized population size eliminates the possibility of an epidemic.
However, Gomes Temporao said the Ministry of Health has nearly two million doses of drugs to deal with a possible increase in cases of the disease during the austral winter.
Since last January, in Brazil there have been 609 proceeds from the influenza A and 74 of them died, said Minister of Health.
