Ceará has recorded its first case of H5N1 avian influenza in domestic poultry. The case occurred at a subsistence farm, where poultry is raised for private consumption, in Quixeramobim, in the state's central hinterland.

In a statement, the Ceará State Agricultural Defense Agency (Adagri) reported that the property was isolated and that the birds were killed on the morning of this Friday (18). The breeding will undergo the sanitation protocol provided for by the National Avian Influenza Contingency Plan, of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa).

According to Agência Brasil, although the case was only disclosed this Saturday (19), the Federal Laboratory of Agricultural Defense (LFDA), in Campinas (SP), confirmed the occurrence of H5N1 after analyzing samples sent on the 8th. Adagri is also investigating properties within a 10-kilometer radius of the outbreak to verify the possible link with other livestock.

The agency emphasizes that consuming poultry meat and eggs stored at home or at points of sale is safe, as the disease is not transmitted through consumption. The agency reiterates that there are no restrictions on consumption.
