This is the first outbreak of HPAI detected in a commercial poultry farming system in Brazil. The virus has been circulating since 2006, mainly in Asia, Africa and northern Europe.

The Ministry of Agriculture warns that the disease is not transmitted by the consumption of poultry meat or eggs. With the confirmation of the outbreak, the Official Veterinary Service of RS (SVO-RS) triggered the actions foreseen in the National Avian Influenza Contingency Plan, with isolation of the area in Montenegro and elimination of the remaining birds, so that the sanitation protocol of the farm can be initiated. Additional investigation will be conducted in an initial radius of 10 km from the area where the outbreak occurred, and possible links with other properties. The mortality of birds at the Sapucaia do Sul Zoo, which is closed to visitors, was also addressed and Seapi awaits the results of the sequencing.

The SVO-RS reinforces that the consumption of poultry meat and eggs stored at home or at points of sale is safe, since the disease is not transmitted through consumption. The population can remain safe, as there are no restrictions on their consumption.

Poultry, commercial birds, ratites, and avian hatching eggs: Importation is prohibited.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA), in line with its commitment to transparency, informs the update of the temporary restrictions imposed on Brazilian poultry meat exports, due to the confirmation of an outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (IAHP) in the municipality of Montenegro (RS).

To date, the suspensions are distributed as follows:

Total suspension of exports from Brazil: China, European Union, Mexico, Iraq, South Korea, Chile, South Africa, Eurasian Union, Peru, Canada, Dominican Republic, Uruguay, Malaysia, Argentina, East Timor, Morocco, Bolivia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Philippines and Jordan.

Suspension for the State of Rio Grande do Sul: United Kingdom, Bahrain, Cuba, Macedonia, Montenegro, Kazakhstan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Tajikistan and Ukraine.

Suspension for the municipality of Montenegro (RS): Japan and Saudi Arabia.

On Tuesday (20/5), 100% of the visits to 540 rural properties within a ten-kilometer radius of the avian influenza outbreak, known as bird flu, confirmed in the municipality of Montenegro, were completed. In addition, employees of the Department of Animal Health Surveillance and Defense of the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Sustainable Production and Irrigation (DDA/Seapi) also revisited 19 properties within a three-kilometer radius that have the presence of birds, as determined by the National Avian Influenza Contingency Plan.

The seven sanitary barriers are operating 24 hours a day and have already disinfected more than 1,200 vehicles. There are two barriers on BR-386, one at the toll booth and another at the scale, one to the north on RS-124, another on TF-10 towards Triunfo, and three others on local roads, one of which is a blockade.
In addition to active surveillance actions and disinfection barriers, employees are working on health education activities, providing guidance in schools and visiting agricultural businesses within a ten-kilometer radius of the outbreak.

“We managed to exceed our expectations and completed the first active surveillance in four days. And starting this Saturday, which marks seven days since the first visit, we will begin to revisit all properties within a ten-kilometer radius again,” highlighted DDA director Rosane Collares.
During surveillance activities, a collection was made from subsistence birds in the municipality of Montenegro and sent to the Federal Laboratory of Agricultural Diagnostics, in Campinas (SP). The State awaits the result from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa).

Avian influenza, or bird flu, is a viral disease that mainly affects birds, but can also infect mammals, including humans. Transmission occurs through contact with sick birds and also through contaminated water and materials.

The Official Veterinary Service of Rio Grande do Sul (SVO-RS) emphasizes that the consumption of poultry meat and eggs stored at home or at points of sale is safe, since the disease is not transmitted through consumption. Therefore, there are no restrictions in this regard.

All suspicions of the disease – which include respiratory, neurological signs or high and sudden mortality in birds – must be immediately reported to Seapi, through the Inspectorate or Agricultural Defense Office, through the e-Sisbravet system or via WhatsApp (51) 98445-2033.​

A new suspected case of bird flu was reported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) this Wednesday (21). Thus, the number of ongoing investigations into suspected cases of the disease in birds in the country rose to eight.

The new case, which has not yet been confirmed, is believed to have occurred in a domestic chicken raised on a subsistence property in the municipality of Gaurama, in Rio Grande do Sul.

The ministry's official dashboard updates data related to bird flu in real time. Rio Grande do Sul, the only state to date to register the presence of the virus in a commercial farm, has three outbreaks under investigation.

The first case occurred on a farm in the city of Montenegro, and was confirmed on Thursday (15). Sanitary measures were reinforced in the region to contain the spread of the disease.

Currently, the eight occurrences under analysis are:

Ipumirim (SC): commercial poultry;

Garopaba (SC): wild bird;

Salitre (CE): domestic chickens;

Aguiarnópolis (TO): commercial activity;

Eldorado do Carajás (PA): domestic chickens;

Gaurama (RS): domestic chicken;

Triunfo (RS): domestic chickens;

Derrubadas (RS): wild bird.

Avian flu in domestic or wild birds has no impact on exports

According to MAPA, cases involving domestic or wild birds do not affect Brazilian exports. However, these cases, if confirmed, may present a risk of dissemination, especially for commercial production.

In Brazil, 3,953 notifications related to Avian Respiratory and Nervous Syndrome have been verified by the Official Veterinary Service since 2022. It took the country almost 20 years to register cases of avian flu, classified as Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HIAIP).

A total of 168 outbreaks have been confirmed to date, 164 of which occurred in wild birds, three in subsistence birds and only one in commercial flocks. Health authorities have been working to prevent the virus, which is highly contagious, from reaching large commercial poultry farms.​
