The influenza is more lethal this year. On average, every 2.7 cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) caused by the virus, one resulted in death in Minas Gerais. At the peak of the epidemic in 2009, the proportion was one death every 5.9 severe cases. In addition to a change in the virus characteristics, contamination of people with preexisting conditions and therefore more susceptible, may explain the picture, according to the State Department of Health (SES). Experts point out an improvement in the notification system. The number of deaths in 2016 is very close to that recorded in 2009. In that year, of the 1,270 people who had acute respiratory syndrome influenza, 214 died (16.8% of patients). In 2016, SES accounts for an alarming number: 37% of patients died. 560 cases and 206 deaths were recorded. The proportion of deaths per number of cases is much higher than the last seven years, an average ranged from 4.2 to 5.9 cases for every death. In Brazil, the Southeast region has the largest number of cases (6,051) of influenza A, with 1,121 deaths.
