The Surveillance of the city of White House, in S?o Paulo, confirmed on Tuesday that one of the deaths occurred in patients in this month's Rehabilitation Center Cocais for psychiatric patients was due to the H3N2 virus.
The first victim confirmed the virus was a man aged 68, who died on Sunday, 9. Two other patients of the clinic died on day 13, with suspected influenza, and tests should soon reveal the cause of death.
The fourth suspicious death of clinic patients was also confirmed by the Epidemiological Surveillance. This is a man of 78 years who died on June 15 and had flu symptoms. He was also patient at the Rehabilitation Center.
Since suspected cases among patients in the center were reported, around 120 patients had to be isolated in a wing of the clinic, and were quarantined. Staff and other patients with circulating masks and redoubled care asepsis, since contagion occurs through physical contact.
Last week, a man aged 32 was admitted for having some of the symptoms of the flu, but was discharged the next day after undergoing tests that will confirm whether he had the H3N2 virus. This may be the first case registered outside the center, since so far only local patients caught the flu.
Prevention and Symptoms
The H3N2 virus can be prevented through vaccines, which are being applied in patients and staff of the Rehabilitation Center. The Department of Health said that the demand for the drug at clinics increased, but the supply is normalized.
Pregnant women, children, the elderly and patients in risk groups with diseases such as hypertension, bronchitis, asthma, emphysema or heart problems can be vaccinated for free at stations in the city.
The main symptoms of the disease usually appear 24 hours after exposure and are the same for the most common influenza, H1N1, and H3N2 for: sudden fever, cough, headache, muscle aches, joint pains and a runny nose. Furthermore, it is common to infected person has difficulty breathing and sore throat. The Department of Health advises that when presenting symptoms, the patient seek a clinic.
