Brunei Records Surge In Dengue Cases

Public Urged To Take Precautionary Measures
Bandar Seri Begawan - Brunei Darussalam recorded a surge in dengue cases with 208 reported from early this year till June 3. Throughout last year, a total of 290 cases were reported, according to the Ministry of Health.

Towards the end of 2012 till today, local dengue cases hit a relatively high rate compared to the same period in previous years, a phenomena similarly experienced by other countries in the region.

Although many of the cases only required symptomatic treatment, one hemorrhagic dengue case was reported and the patient, currently undergoing treatment at the hospital, is now in a stable condition.

The spikes in cases are mostly blamed on heavy downpours currently experienced by the Sultanate, which causes more areas to retain stagnant water thus creating a 'perfect' breeding ground for the Aedes mosquitoes, be it indoors or outside the housing compound.

Brunei records rise in dengue cases

BRUNEI has reported an increase in dengue cases, with 349 recorded this year. There were 290 dengue cases last year, the Ministry of Health said.

Most of the dengue cases were reported in the Brunei-Muara district.

According to a press release, the rise in cases was attributed to the heavy rainfall experienced recently.

?In Brunei Darussalam, dengue fever has increased since 2012. According to statistics from the Ministry of Health, a total of 298 dengue cases were reported in 2012 while 414 cases were reported in 2013,? he said.

The minister further added that among the cases of dengue fever reported in 2013, there were four cases of dengue haemorrhagic fever. However, no deaths were recorded caused by the disease in the past two years.

He also mentioned that based on research, a total of 38 cases of dengue fever were reported from January to March this year.
