The meeting brought together around thirty journalists from various media.

During the first six weeks of 2024, Burkina Faso recorded 1,269 suspected cases of measles with 04 deaths. These different cases were recorded in 6 health districts in the Center, North, Center-North and Boucle du Mouhoun regions. It is to provide the right information to the population on these cases of measles that the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene organized this information meeting with journalists.

According to the director of population health protection, the incident manager of the response against this disease, Dr Hamed Sidwaya Ouรฉdraogo, the increase in measles cases could be explained by a drop in vaccination coverage in localities. concerned. To break the chain of transmission of this disease, confides the incident manager, measures are being taken to strengthen disease surveillance, for case management and a vaccination campaign is planned to strengthen defense capacity children aged 9 to 59 months who are most exposed to the disease.

Also, Dr Hamed Sidwaya Ouรฉdraogo invited women and men in the media to help raise awareness among the population for the adoption of behaviors favorable to health and for their support for vaccination campaigns. This meeting allowed journalists to have elements of response to the various concerns raised.

By supporting this initiative, the Burkinabรจ Red Cross (#CRB) wants to contribute to improving the health of the population in Burkina Faso. For the health coordinator of this organization, Dr Fabrice Ouรฉdraogo, this information meeting with journalists will make it possible to convey the right information to the population. This will facilitate the work of the Burkinabรจ Red Cross, particularly in its interventions in favor of communities.

As a reminder, measles is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus, which spreads easily when an infected person breathes, coughs or sneezes into the air. It manifests itself with fever, red eyes, inflamed eyes, dry cough and a rash all over the body.

MEASLES IN BURKINA, โ€œ2,355 CASES AND 8 DEATHS RECORDED SINCE JANUARY 2024โ€, DR DANIEL YERBANGA, DIRECTOR OF HEALTH OF THE CENTER

Published on :
Tue March 5, 2024

Burkina Faso has been facing a measles epidemic since the beginning of 2024. 2,355 cases and 8 deaths have been recorded across all 13 regions of the country. Preventive measures, including a vaccination campaign, have been put in place to stem the spread of the virus. The regional health director of the Center, Dr Daniel Yerbanga takes stock of the national health situation in this interview with Libreinfo.net.

Comments collected by Prisca Konkobo

Libreinfo.net : Give us an overview of the current situation of the measles epidemic in Burkina Faso.

Dr Daniel Yerbanga: Since the first week of January 2024 until last week (February 18 to 25, editor's note), several cases of measles have been reported.

For all of Burkina, 2,355 cases have been recorded with, unfortunately, 8 deaths. These figures concern all 13 regions of the country.

We have reported 957 cases in the central region, including 5 deaths. Four regions are almost in an epidemic. These are the Center, Center North, North and Boucle du Mouhoun regions.
...
In the Central region, two very affected districts were recorded. These are the Boulmiougou district and the Bogodogo district. This is the situation which prevails at the national level and at the level of the Central region.

Libreinfo.net : What age groups are affected by this epidemic?

Dr Daniel Yerbanga: Measles affects all age groups. The first investigation carried out in the Central region reveals that there are children aged 5 to 14 who are affected.

There are children over 14 years old and even adults who are also affected by the disease. But it affects children aged 5 to 14 much more, especially those under 5.

Libreinfo.net : What are the factors that favored the reappearance of the disease in Burkina?

Dr Daniel Yerbanga: Measles exists in Burkina. It is not a disease that is re-emerging. Every year, there are cases of measles.

Outbreaks can come periodically. In 2021, there were cases of measles. We were even in a situation which required reactive vaccination at the local level.

Measles is transmitted through the air. The period of onset of heat is favorable for the manifestation of the disease.

And since it is transmitted through the air, if someone is contaminated and has not been quickly diagnosed and placed in isolation, they have time to spread the germs through coughing and droplets of saliva.

Those who are not well immunized, in terms of vaccination, can easily become infected.
...
What can also encourage contamination is when vaccination coverage has not been completely correct to protect all children.

Libreinfo.net : Faced with such a situation, what preventive measures have been put in place to counter the spread of measles?

Dr Daniel Yerbanga: For prevention, there are vaccinations (vaccine against measles and rubella). These vaccines are given to children aged nine months and repeated at 15 months.

Those who have been correctly vaccinated and who have followed the vaccination schedule are protected even if the protection is not 100% effective.

When cases appear in a given locality, what we can do in addition to vaccination is to quickly identify those who are sick and isolate them before they become sources of contamination.

But vaccination remains the most effective prevention against this disease.

Libreinfo.net : Apart from vaccination, are there other treatments available for infected people?

Dr Daniel Yerbanga: Measles is a viral disease so treatment is limited to treating the symptoms and treating secondary infections and giving medications which also protect the other systems which can be affected by this disease, in this case the eyes.

There is a risk of ocular complications that can occur during measles.

This is why vitamin A is prescribed. It is to help avoid these complications.

Manifestation of the disease without signs of infectious complications does not need drug antibiotic therapy.

The treatment protocol is known and if there are no complications, we limit ourselves to treating the symptoms in order to allow the person to regain health.

Libreinfo.net : How is vaccination currently carried out to prevent new infections?

Dr Daniel Yerbanga: Since the trend is increasing in the regions, the Ministry of Health has set in motion the Health Emergency Response Operations Center (CORUS) to manage this situation.

The activation of CORUS led to the decision to proceed with reactive vaccination.

Vaccination which was planned for April in the form of routine follow-up vaccination was brought closer to start in the 4 regions most affected by the disease (Center, Center-North, North and Boucle du Mouhoun).

The first phase of vaccination began on February 26 and ended on March 3, 2024.
We trained the vaccinators who are in teams of three people, two health workers and a mobilizer.

Children eligible for vaccination are those aged 9 months to 59 months.

Vaccinations are not only done in health centers. Sites are also set up in cities.

In health centers, fixed teams are identified. Their role is to ensure that all the children who will come to the health center and who are part of the target are not missed.

The other teams go into the community, to the usual vaccination sites to vaccinate children.

A second wave of vaccination is also planned. Currently, vaccination is carried out in the regions most affected by the disease.

Nine districts are affected out of 70 districts. These are the districts of Tougouri and Ouahigouya in the North; Boulmiougou, Baskuy, Bogodogo, NongreMassom, SigNoghin, in the Center; Boromo and Solenzo in the Boucle du Mouhoun.

The second wave of vaccination will begin on March 15, 2024 and will concern the remaining 61 districts. It will end on March 22.

Libreinfo.net : What advice do you have to give to the population?

Dr Daniel Yerbanga: We ask parents to adhere to vaccination . It is the most effective way to protect populations against diseases.

The State has made an effort by providing the means so that we can have the vaccine.
So the first thing is to ask for support and understanding from parents and mothers of children.

They must bring the targeted children to the vaccination sites during the fixed period and have them vaccinated.

You also have to be vigilant. When a case is detected in a community, in a family, we bring it to a health center so that we can administer care to it and prevent it from being a source of contamination for those close to it.

Logically, we can isolate it at the health center level in treatment rooms. Isolation is also a means of prevention for other members of the community.
