JURUPA VALLEY, Calif. (KABC) --

An elementary school in Riverside County was on edge after two students reportedly contracted Hansen's disease, otherwise known as leprosy.

While there has been no official confirmation, school officials issued a warning to parents of students at Indian Hills Elementary School in Jurupa Valley.

"We had reported to the office two students who were initially told by their doctor that they were diagnosed with leprosy, this is unconfirmed because leprosy requires a significant diagnosis including things like a biopsy," Jurupa Unified School District Superintendent Elliott Duchon explained...

The two cases of leprosy were diagnosed by a doctor but are considered unconfirmed by the Riverside County public health department and Jurupa Unified School District.

Preliminary specimens from two Indian Hills Elementary School students have been sent to the National Hansen?s Disease (Leprosy) Program lab in Baton Rouge. Test results are expected in several weeks, said Riverside County Director of Disease Control Barbara Cole.

The two children diagnosed with the disease were not in school Tuesday, said Duchon, who couldn?t say whether the children are related.

Cole, who was preparing to interview the parents and doctor Tuesday afternoon, didn?t know if the children had traveled recently or were related. Neither one is currently hospitalized.

Riverside County has had seven reported leprosy cases ? the most recent in 2011. County public health officials monitor people with the disease and will inform school officials if the children?s specimens test positive.

Lab tests have confirmed that a Jurupa Valley child has leprosy, or Hansen?s disease, Riverside County public health officials reported Thursday, Sept. 22.

The findings by the National Hansen?s Disease (Leprosy) Laboratory Research Program in Baton Rouge, La., supported a local doctor?s diagnosis that a student at Indian Hills Elementary School had leprosy.

A second student who may be related to the other child also had been diagnosed with the disease, but lab results did not confirm that the second person has leprosy...
