Third Person In San Diego Dies From Hepatitis A Outbreak

Another person has died from a Hepatitis A outbreak, bringing the total death count to three in San Diego, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) announced Friday.

There have been 80 confirmed cases of Hepatitis A as of May 1--66 people have been hospitalized during the outbreak, according to HHSA.


Public health investigators continue to look for the cause. So far, they said there has not been a food, drink or drug source that accounts for the cases...

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA ? Nine homeless people in their 20s and 30s in Santa Cruz have been diagnosed with Hepatitis A in the last eight weeks, constituting an outbreak of the same strain that recently killed four people in the San Diego area, Santa Cruz County health officials said Tuesday.

Santa Cruz County public health officer Arnold Leff believes the outbreak is connected with a larger one that started in San Diego County last year.

In November, two people were diagnosed with the disease in San Diego County, but as of Monday that number had climbed to 160, including four deaths and 80 percent of those infected having been hospitalized, Leff said...

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A hepatitis A outbreak in the San Diego area has claimed the life of a fifth person, county health officials reported Wednesday.

The outbreak now totals 228 cases and required the hospitalization of 161 of those sickened, according to the county Health and Human Services Agency. So far, the disease has mostly affected the homeless population and/or users of illegal drugs, with seven out of every 10 cases affecting those populations. One of every five people sickened with hepatitis A also has hepatitis C.

The county reported the fifth death exactly one month after the fourth death on June 12. In the month since, the county has learned of 68 new cases, with 41 additional hospitalizations. The third death was reported May 5.

Public health investigators have not identified any common food, drink or drug source as a contributing cause to this outbreak, officials said. Hepatitis A is most commonly spread via contaminated food or water, sexual contact or sharing drug paraphernalia...

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA ? Eight people have now died from a hepatitis A outbreak in San Diego County, health officials announced Friday.

According to the County Health and Human Services Agency, 275 cases have been reported, with 194 people hospitalized during the outbreak. All eight people who have died had underlying medical conditions at the time of their death.

Public health investigators continue to evaluate cases, but most of those who have become ill are either homeless or illicit drug users, according to the agency. In fact, people who are either homeless or illicit drug users account for at least seven in 10 of the illnesses, and just over one in five also have hepatitis C...

San Diego?s relentless hepatitis A outbreak is showing no signs of slowing down, according to the latest set of numbers from the county?s public health department.

Posted Tuesday by the county Health and Human Services Agency, the weekly case update bumps the outbreak?s death total to 11, three more than were reported on July 28.

The number of local hepatitis A cases confirmed so far this year also jumped, reaching 333 from a total of 275 reported 18 days ago. It?s a stratospheric total for a disease that averaged only 28 cases per year in San Diego from 2012 to 2016, according to county records.

Confirmed cases are not the only tally on the rise. Hepatitis A has now hospitalized 232 people this year, up from 38 from the 194 hospitalizations reported in late July...

San Diego Hepatitis A Outbreak, 2017
Since early 2017, the Public Health Services Division, in the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency, has been investigating a local Hepatitis A outbreak. The majority of people who have contracted hepatitis A are homeless and/or illicit drug users, although some cases have been neither. The outbreak is being spread person-to-person and through contact with a fecally contaminated environment. No common sources of food, beverage or drugs have been identified that have contributed to this outbreak, though investigation is ongoing. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that person-to-person transmission through close contact is the primary way people get hepatitis A in the United States.
Vaccination efforts are being implemented in targeted locations by County staff and in collaboration with health care partners. Health providers are asked to inform the Epidemiology Program if they have a patient suspected to have the hepatitis A infection, before the patient leaves the emergency department or provider?s office (see contact number below).

Usually, county health officials will see one to two cases of Hepatitis A each year, but health officials have identified more than 60 cases since March.

City officials have begun power washing parts of Downtown San Diego in an effort to combat the Hepatitis A outbreak.

Since the outbreak, 16 people have died and hundreds have been infected, making it the worst outbreak to hit San Diego in decades.

SAN DIEGO ? Nearly two dozen cases of hepatitis A have been reported in seven jails throughout San Diego county, officials reported Wednesday.

Of 21 cases reported, 16 of the inmates came to jail already infected with hepatitis A and five contracted the virus while incarcerated, according to Sheriff?s Department spokesman Ryan Keim.

There are roughly 5,800 inmates across the county, and more than 2,300 have now received vaccinations.

North County cities log nearly two dozen cases of hepatitis

With one new hepatitis A death reported, county leaders unanimously re-ratified San Diego?s ongoing public health emergency Tuesday morning.

The Board of Supervisors must approve the emergency declaration every two weeks for it to remain in effect. It was first declared Sept. 1.

Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county?s public health officer, gave a weekly outbreak update which pushed the death total to 17 with 461 cases and 315 hospitalizations over the course of the outbreak. That?s one more death, 17 more cases and 10 more hospitalizations than a week ago...
