Public Health Department confirms measles case, unvaccinated student attended Yuba River Charter School while contagious

NEVADA CITY, Calif. March 29, 2016 - The Nevada County Public Health Department is announcing a confirmed case of measles in Western Nevada County. The unvaccinated student attends Yuba River Charter School and was infectious while at school on March 17, 2016. The Public Health Department is working with the school to notify parents of this possible exposure. Students who have not had the MMR (Measles-Mumps-Rubella) vaccine are at risk for both contracting the disease and spreading the disease, even before symptoms appear. A child is at risk of developing measles if he/she has never had the disease or has not received the vaccination. Two doses of MMR are recommended for school-aged children. Children who have received one or two doses of MMR may still get measles, but the chances are substantially reduced and the disease is typically milder...

SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY, Calif. (KCRA) ?The San Joaquin County Public Health Services issued a warning Friday of potential measles exposure for people who ate at a Stockton restaurant.
The department confirmed a Nevada County child who contracted measles ate at Royal Indian Cuisine at 7610 Pacific Ave.
Health officials are asking others who dined there on March 22 between the hours of 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. to contact the health department at 209-468-3822.
It was reported that the same child also ate at Strings Italian Cafe in Amador County, which also issued a warning to its patrons...
Measles case under investigation in Calaveras County

Calaveras County Public Health Services announced Tuesday that it is investigating a confirmed measles case, according to a press release from the county.
Dr. Dean Kelaita, the Calaveras County Public Health officer, said a child who was traveling through the county was diagnosed with measles. Public Health Services is investigating to determine whether any residents were infected.
According to the press release, the unvaccinated child lives in Nevada County and contracted the illness after returning to California from abroad...

Los Angeles County's public health department said Friday that it has confirmed two more measles cases, bringing to nine the number it has identified in the outbreak that it says began a month ago.
So why does such a small number of cases constitute an outbreak?
Public Health says it declared an outbreak because "the number of cases is definitely greater than expected and the majority of confirmed cases are epidemiologically linked."...
