POWAY ---- A 9-year-old student at Highland Elementary School has been diagnosed with mumps, a contagious viral disease that can cause rare but serious complications including meningitis and permanent hearing loss, officials said Friday.

On Wednesday afternoon, October 5, the California Department of Public Health has opened up free vaccinations to all UC Berkeley faculty and staff. The MMR vaccinations will be administered during our already scheduled Flu Shot Clinic dates. No appointment is necessary.

...Cases of mumps, so far only identified in students, have risen dramatically since the first instances were announced Friday. From only four known cases last week, there were as many as 20 by Wednesday afternoon, according to Kim LaPean, communications manager for campus University Health Services.

BERKELEY -- Hundreds of UC Berkeley students and employees lined up outside the campus health center Thursday for free vaccinations after a mumps outbreak infected up to 20 students.

Although health officials initially wondered whether the outbreak started with students who had not been vaccinated, a spokeswoman for the city of Berkeley said all the patients had received the two recommended doses before becoming ill. Three vaccinations are recommended for people living and working on college campuses, a city health official said.

A mumps outbreak among the UC Berkeley community has increased to 27 suspected and confirmed cases, state officials said Friday...

...Just one week ago, the number of suspected and confirmed cases stood at three.

There have only been six confirmed cases of mumps in the city of Berkeley since 1990, prior to this outbreak.

Campus health services is offering a vaccination clinic on Oct. 14 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. where MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) and flu shots will be offered. The MMR vaccination is only available for UC Berkeley faculty, staff and students, according to the Tang Center website.

The first clinic was Thursday, where those waiting for vaccinations stood in line for an hour and fifteen minutes on average, according to the Tang Center?s Twitter page...

About three weeks after the first cases of mumps were recorded within the UC Berkeley community, health officials warn that the outbreak is not over and the campus could face a second wave of cases soon.

The mumps outbreak which infected approimately 29 UC Berkeley students last semester appears to be officially over.

In a statement released by the city of Berkeley Monday, city Public Health Officer Janet Berreman said it has been more than three months ? more than two incubation periods ? since the last mumps patient was reported in the city, ?which gives us confidence that the cycle of infection for this outbreak has been successfully disrupted...?

The CDC has issued its report on the mumps outbreak at Berkeley last year.

While we initially heard of two confirmed cases and a third suspected case of mumps, the CDC report, "Mumps Outbreak on a University Campus - California, 2011," adds another 26 cases to the outbreak, which lasted from August 25, 2011 to January 7, 2012.

As with many of the recent measles outbreaks in the United States, this mumps outbreak started with an unvaccinated student traveling to Europe. He returned, got sick, and proceeded to directly and indirectly get an additional 28 people sick, including four who developed orchitis (testicular inflammation).
