Public Health Update: Confirmed Case of Measles in Berkeley

January 23, 2011: Berkeley?s Public Health Division has confirmed a case of measles in Berkeley. We are taking measures to prevent the spread of this disease.​

Measles spreads easily and rapidly from person to person. It is generally not a dangerous disease for healthy individuals. People who have been vaccinated with the ?MMR? vaccine are protected from serious illness (as are those who have already had measles). However for people with weakened immune systems, or infants too young to be immunized, measles can be very serious. The most important step you can take is to make sure that you and your children have received the MMR vaccine.​

The Public Health Division is notifying residents who may have been exposed, and providing them with additional information and ways they can help prevent the spread of this illness.

It is possible that there will be additional cases of measles identified in the coming days and weeks. We will update this site if it appears that the illness is spreading in our community.

The California Department of Public Health takes each case of measles seriously, and is working closely with us to do everything possible to prevent the spread of disease.

A case of the measles has been reported in Poway, San Diego County's Health and Human Services agency announced Friday.

According to the agency, the 27-year-old Poway man became ill after traveling to the Philippines and Thailand...

...Officials warned that potential for public exposure to the measles from this occurred at:

* Rite Aid, 11845 Carmel Mountain Rd., on March 12 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
* Costco, 12350 Carmel Mountain Rd., San Diego, on March 7 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and March 9 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
* Radisson Hotel, 11520 West Bernardo Ct., on March 3 in the evening and March 4 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The California Public Health Laboratory confirmed a case of measles on April 6, 2011 in a 29 year old European tourist vacationing in California. The patient's onset of illness was April 2nd and he was infectious from March 29th through April 6th. The tourist spent approximately 12 hours in Santa Barbara County, exclusively in the city of Santa Barbara, on only the days of March 31st and April 1st. He visited two restaurants and one motel where exposure of the public may have occurred...

...A small number of the Santa Barbara public may have been exposed in the locations that the tourist visited but since he did not spend a substantial time at any of these and he was not yet ill, the risk of transmission is probably low. These locations are Holiday Lodge Motel at 2825 State Street, Shintori Sushi at 3001 State Street (probable) on the evening of March 31st and Our Daily Bread at 831 Santa Barbara Street in the morning of April 1st. If there was no exposure at these sites and times, then the risk of infection is extremely small...

NORTH COAST, Calif. ? Health officials in Mendocino County reported Monday that they're seeing an outbreak in their area of measles, a childhood illness that immunizations largely wiped out in the United States but which is making a comeback.

A report from public health nurse Erika Nosera of the Mendocino County Health and Human Services Agency's Public Health Branch said Mendocino County has had three confirmed cases of measles so far this year.

Those three cases in Mendocino County are among 11 cases reported statewide so far this year, health officials said. Nearly all of the cases have been linked to travelers to or from Europe and Asia, as well as their contacts.

Health official revealed on Friday that measles cases are rising in California, which has been driven into the city from outside travelers. California has reported 13 measles cases in 2011, among which 7 cases were reported in April. Four patients have been admitted in hospital.

The Deputy Director of the California Department of Public Health, Dr. Gilberto, said that infected travelers have included unimmunized Californians traveling abroad and foreign visitors to the state. People who just come in contact with infected travelers are also affected from measles...

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Passengers on a United Airlines flight from Chicago to San Diego on May 27 may have been exposed to measles, the county Health and Human Services Agency announced Thursday.

A 43-year-old Italian man with the highly contagious disease traveled from Brussels, Belgium, to New York City and then to Rochester, N.Y. He then flew to Chicago and caught the aircraft bound for San Diego, United Flight 521, according to HHSA.

The HHSA said passengers in Terminal 1 at Lindbergh Field and an Avis rental car shuttle also might have been exposed by the man, who had never been immunized for the illness.

He went to an urgent care center in Encinitas the day after his arrival...

A 22-year-old Humboldt County woman who visited China last month tested positive for measles -- the first documented case in Humboldt County in over a decade. Health officials said today more people may have been infected.

The test results were confirmed Tuesday, according to the public health branch.

The woman returned to Humboldt County from China on May 19 and visited the China Buffet on Fourth Street in Eureka on May 20, according to Public Health Officer Ann Lindsay. The patient also worked at Hometown Buffet in the Bayshore Mall on May 23 and May 24.

People who visited China Buffet between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. May 20 should watch for symptoms until Friday. Those who ate at Hometown Buffet between 10:45 a.m. and 2 p.m. May 23 and May 24 should also watch for measles symptoms until June 14, Lindsay said...

California measles cases hit a 10-year high

...As of Monday, there were 28 reported cases of measles in 2011, according to the California Department of Public Health. That is the highest incidence since 2001, when 40 people reported having measles. There were nine cases in all of 2009 and 27 cases in 2010.

Of the cases reported this year, 22 of the 28 were not vaccinated or very likely to lack the vaccine. More than half had recently traveled internationally, including to Europe, where vaccination rates have dropped and measles cases have risen...
