About 1,000 more cases of dengue fever were reported in Cambodia during the first three months of this year than the same period in 2011, a Ministry of Health spokesperson said yesterday.

Chor Meng Chuor, director of the National Centre for Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria Control, said eight people had died and 1,393 were infected through to March 31, up from four deaths and 339 cases in the first three months of last year...

PHNOM PENH, May 13 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia reported 2,277 dengue fever cases, killing 14 children in the first four months of 2012, Dr. Char Meng Chuor, director of the National Center for Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria Control, said Sunday.

During the four months this year, the infection cases of the disease had increased by 369 percent if compared to the same period last year, he said.

Last year, the country reported 15,980 dengue fever cases, killing 73 children.

Dengue death toll now at 38

Dengue fever killed eight people in the past two weeks, an alarming figure which should put the public on alert to prevent a outbreak like the one in 2007, government officials said yesterday.

The death toll now stands at 38 through the first 25 weeks of the year, and public health facilities have reported 8,843 dengue cases in the Kingdom, with 1,642 cases in the past two weeks alone.

The updated numbers came from National Dengue Control Program director Ngan Chanta, who had received updated records and described weeks 24 to 27 of the year as a ?big peak of dengue?, pointing to spikes in both cases and deaths.

Dengue numbers swell

At least 45 people have died from dengue fever this year, and the number of infected cases has jumped to more than 10,000 in Cambodia.

Public health facilities reported 10,282 cases for the first 25 weeks of the year, but data are still not complete, said Ngan Chantha, National Dengue Control Program director.

It takes about two weeks for the Ministry of Health to collect data, and the numbers for the first half of 2012 will not be ready until mid-July, he said.

As the dengue death toll swells, the hospital treating about 80 per cent of dengue-suffering children in Cambodia has received two new donations totalling US$1.3 million.

The disease has claimed the lives of 57 children in the Kingdom as of July 3, and public health facilities reported 14,284 cases, National Dengue Control Program director Ngan Chantha said.

That represented a jump of nine deaths and 2,618 new cases in just under a week.

Among the cases reported, 9,733 were treated at Kantha Bopha Childrens Hospitals, according to Ngan Chantha.

60 Cambodian kids killed by dengue fever in 1st six months

Cambodia reported 15,597 dengue fever cases in the first six months of this year, a 239 percent rise from 4,604 cases at the same period last year, according to the report of the National Center for Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria Control on Wednesday.
During the January-June period this year, the disease had killed 60 children, up from only 23 deaths at the same period last year, the report said.

Dengue fever numbers in Cambodia are showing no signs of abating, with July recording an enormous spike in both deaths and infections from the mosquito-borne disease.

New statistics from the National Centre for Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria Control reveal that 98 people died from the disease from January to the end of July, while 23,216 infections had been contracted.

At the end of June, 60 people had perished from dengue, while 15,600 had been infected, although the dengue toll has not yet reached the grave numbers of 2007, which saw 400 deaths in the first seven months of that year.

PHNOM PENH, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- At least 124 Cambodian children were killed by dengue fever in the first eight months of this year, a 158 percent rise from only 48 deaths in the same period last year, according to the report of the National Center for Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria Control on Saturday.

Some 30,760 dengue fever cases were reported during the January- August period this year, an increase of 179 percent compared with 11,020 cases in the same period last year, the report said.

The province with the highest death toll is Banteay Meanchey with 20 deaths, followed by Siem Reap with 18 deaths and Kampong Cham with 16.

At least 34,483 dengue fever cases were reported in Cambodia in the first nine months of this year, a 166 percent increase compared with 12,972 cases in the same period last year, a report of the National Center for Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria Control showed Wednesday.

From January to September this year, the disease had killed 146 Cambodian children, up 147 percent compared with 59 deaths during the same period last year.

"The disease continues to kill between 3 and 5 children a week," said Dr. Char Meng Chuor, director of the center.

The fight against dengue fever, a virus that has killed more than 120 people in Cambodia so far this year, will for the first time be linked with efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change in the country through a World Health Organization (WHO) project set to receive funding this week.

The project, which will expand upon existing interventions against dengue fever, as well as track climate and weather patterns in relation to the virus, will receive about $300,000 in funding from the Cambodian Climate Change Alliance...

...There were 124 deaths out of 30,944 reported cases of dengue fever this year as of August 28, compared with 48 deaths out of 11,020 dengue cases in all of 2011, according to WHO statistics...

PHNOM PENH, Nov. 13 ? Cambodia reported at least 39, 290 dengue fever cases in the first ten months of this year, a 163 percent rise from 14,918 cases a year earlier, a report of the National Center for Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria Control showed Tuesday.

The report recorded that from January to October this year, the disease killed 170 Cambodian children, up 154 percent from 67 deaths during the same period last year.

Dr. Char Meng Chuor, director of the center, said that there were more deaths this year because parents had sent their sick children to private clinics first, and when the treatment was ineffective and the disease became more severe, they turned to public hospitals, but it was too late for the children to be cured.

The disease killed 189 children in 2012, up 159 percent from 73 deaths in 2011, Dr. Ngan Chantha, director of the Health Ministry' s national dengue control program, told Xinhua over the phone.

He said the patients are mostly between 5 and 14 years old. " There were more deaths last year because parents sent their disease-infected kids to private clinics first, and when the treatment was ineffective and the patients got serious, they continued to send them to public hospitals, but it was too late for them to be cured," he said.
