PHNOM PENH, January 13 (Xinhua) -- A 2-year-old boy from northwestern Cambodian province of Banteay Meanchey was infected with avian influenza H5N1 virus, Cambodia's Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization announced Friday.

The patient is currently in "critical condition" in Angkor Hospital for Children in Siem Reap province.

The boy became sick on January 3 with fever, cough, runny nose and vomiting, the statement said, adding that he was initially treated by local private practitioners, but his conditions worsened and he was admitted to Angkor Hospital for Children on January 9.

"The diagnosis of the clinical samples on January 12 found that the boy had contact with sick or dead poultry prior to becoming sick," it said.

The boy is the nineteenth person in Cambodia to become infected with the fatal H5N1 virus, and the first such victim this year, said the statement. Of all the nineteen cases, 16 died.

"Avian influenza is still a threat to the health of Cambodians. This is the first case of H5N1 infection in human this year, and children appear to be most vulnerable," the Minister of Health Mam Bunheng said in the statement.

A two-year-old boy from Banteay Meanchey province is in critical condition after being diagnosed with avian influenza in the Kingdom?s first confirmed case of the virus this year, according to a joint statement from the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organisation issued on Friday.

Kao Sopheaktra said that officials would continue to monitor the health of the boy?s relatives and other villagers for at least two weeks.


Commune chief Hem Sarith said the boy fell sick two days after eating sick poultry and that poultry in the area were now being tested.

Ly Sovann, deputy director of the communicable disease control department at the Health Ministry, could not be reached for comment, but he told the Post last week that the department had appealed to the public and health officials to be on alert for suspected cases.

Avian influenza ? situation in Cambodia

The Ministry of Health (MoH) of the Kingdom of Cambodia has announced a confirmed case of human infection with avian influenza A (H5N1) virus.

The case was a 2 year-old male from Banteay Meanchey Province. He developed symptoms on 3 January 2012 and was admitted to hospital on 9 January 2012. He is on Tamiflu and has been ventilated.

There have been reports that the boy was exposed to sick poultry in his village.

He is the 19th person in Cambodia to become infected with the H5N1 virus; to date, 16 of these cases have died from complications of the disease.

The National and local Rapid Response Teams (RRT) are conducting outbreak investigation and response following the national protocol. Hospital staff who had contact with the case have been offered oseltamivir. To date, none of the human contacts have tested positive for A (H5N1).

Bird flu-infected Cambodian boy died


PHNOM PENH (Xinhua) -- A 2-year-and-7 month-old boy from northwestern province of Banteay Meanchey had died early Wednesday from avian influenza A (H5N1) virus after being admitted to hospital for about a week, said a senior health official.

"The boy passed away at 2:00 a.m. early Wednesday due to critical condition," Sok Touch, director of the Health Ministry' s anti-communicable disease department, told Xinhua over telephone on Wednesday.

He said the boy was the nineteenth person in Cambodia to become infected with H5N1 virus, and the first person died this year. "To date, 17 persons had died from H5N1 in Cambodia," he said.

According to a joint statement of Cambodia's Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization last Friday, the boy became sick on Jan. 3, 2012 suffering with fever, cough, runny nose, and vomiting.

He was initially treated by local private practitioners, but his conditions worsened and he was admitted to Angkor Hospital for Children on Jan. 9, where he died.

"The diagnosis of the clinical samples on Jan. 12 found that the boy had contact with sick or dead poultry prior to becoming sick," it said.

Banteay Meanchey is situated in northwest of Cambodia about 400 kilometers from capital Phnom Penh.
