With active case numbers breaking records for the second straight day, Alberta has entered the COVID-19 "danger zone," says the province's top doctor.

The province has not yet reached a situation that risks overwhelming the health system, but evidence from around the world shows just how fast the illness can spread and how quickly the pandemic can escalate, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, the province's chief medical officer of health, said Tuesday at a news conference.

"I would say right now we are in a danger zone, where the coming weeks will really tell that story about whether we are able collectively to bend that curve downward, by following all of that guidance that's already out there, that's up online," Hinshaw said.

"Or, if we start to tip the wrong way, and see our hospitals fill up, and impair our ability to do elective surgeries, impair our ability to offer services that our health-care system needs to be able to offer to others that are not COVID-related."

"So we're not yet at that point where our system is not able to cope, but we are getting closer."...

Alberta adds 406 new cases of COVID-19 Wednesday, 3 additional deaths

Alberta Health reported another 406 cases of COVID-19 Wednesday, bringing the total of Albertans who have been affected with the virus to 23,402.

Wednesday’s numbers mark a new daily high for Alberta.

According to the latest numbers, there are 3,372 active cases across the province. As has been the case over the last few weeks, the majority of active cases are in the Edmonton zone with 1,649.

There are 1,174 active cases in the Calgary zone, 140 in the Central zone, 203 active cases are in the South zone and there are 189 active cases in the North zone. There are currently 17 active cases not affiliated with a specific zone.

Alberta Health reported three new deaths as well, bringing Alberta’s COVID-19 death toll to 296...

Four pandemic-related deaths and 432 more cases of COVID-19 were confirmed by Alberta Health on Friday.

Three of the deaths were in the Edmonton zone. One, a man in his 80s, was not linked to continuing care.

The other two were both linked to outbreaks in Edmonton: a man in his 90s who was linked to the Edmonton General Care Centre outbreak and a woman in her 80s linked to the outbreak at the Misericordia Community Hospital.

In the Calgary zone, a man in his 40s died.

New restrictions announced for Alberta as 860 COVID-19 cases, 10 deaths reported Thursday

New targeted restrictions are on the way for some Alberta regions in hopes of bringing spiking COVID-19 cases under control.

Indoor group fitness classes and team sports will be prohibited for two weeks from Nov. 13-27, Premier Jason Kenney announced Thursday afternoon. This applies to the Calgary area, Edmonton area, Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, Lethbridge and Red Deer.

The above restrictions do not apply to junior, college and university sports. Kenney said they have additional public health measures in place to limit the risk of exposure...

EDMONTON -- Alberta Health reported 907 COVID-19 cases Friday — its second-highest daily count of the pandemic.

The province now has 8,593 active cases after it added 288 new infections of the coronavirus on Thursday.

The Edmonton zone exceeded the Calgary zone for most active cases once again with 3,572 and 3,553, respectively.

Alberta records 773 cases of COVID-19 Tuesday, 5 deaths

Alberta has recorded another 773 new cases of COVID-19 and five additional deaths from the disease.

Four of the deaths were in the Edmonton zone and included a man in his 60s and a woman in her 100s who were not in continuing care. A man in his 80s who was linked to the outbreak at South Terrace Continuing Care died, as well as a woman in her 80s who was linked to the outbreak at the Rutherford Retirement Residence.

A man in his 80s from the South zone also died. He was not linked to a continuing care facility, according to Alberta Health. Alberta’s death toll has now reached 432.

Tuesday’s data also shows the active number of cases of COVID-19 in Alberta has increased slightly to 10,068. That’s up from 10,031 active cases Monday...

With 1,105 new COVID-19 cases, Alberta sets another single-day record
Eight more people died from the disease, four in Edmonton and four in Calgary

Alberta set another COVID-19 record on Thursday with 1,105 new cases of the illness, the most ever reported in a single day.

It's only the second time Alberta has reported more than 1,000 cases in a single day. The first time that happened was less than a week ago, on Saturday, Nov. 14, when the province announced 1,026 cases.

Eight more people died from the disease, bringing the total to 451.

Across the province there were 10,382 actives cases, an increase of 325 from the day before.

Hospitalizations were mostly unchanged, with 284 people now being treated in acute-care for COVID-19, with 61 of them in ICU beds.

The regional breakdown of active cases was:

Calgary zone: 4,219

Alberta is not bringing in any new health measures, despite Friday's announcement of a record 1,155 new cases of COVID-19.

"Our current situation is grim," Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta's chief medical officer of health, said at a news conference.

But Hinshaw said officials are waiting to see if measures announced one week ago have an effect on case numbers before pursuing further restrictions to slow the spread.

"Of course, I am concerned," she said. "The measures that we have put in place over the past several months may have somewhat slowed the growth, but they have not bent the curve as much as we need to.

"And we do need everyone to pull together to follow all of those measures to the letter, or unfortunately we will need to put in additional restrictions."

Alberta has one of the highest infection rates in the country, but has among the fewest restrictions...

Despite no COVID-19 deaths reported Sunday, Alberta adds another record-breaking 1,584 cases

Despite reporting no additional deaths Sunday, Alberta has broken its own record for the fourth consecutive day for the most COVID-19 cases reported in one day.

On Sunday, the province saw 1,584 COVID-19 additional cases confirmed in Alberta.

However, while Sunday marked a respite from fatalities with zero deaths, it followed what was a deadly week in the province. Alberta recorded its highest-single day of fatalities Monday with 20 deaths, and there were 70 deaths recorded from Nov. 15 to Nov. 21.

The provincial COVID-19 death toll sits at 471.

There are now 319 Albertans in hospital, including 60 in intensive care...

For Albertans fearful about the raging COVID-19 pandemic, the big numbers just keep piling up — on Monday the province reported 1,549 new cases and a total of 13,166 active cases.

At her news conference, Dr. Deena Hinshaw said the province has reached "a precarious point" where the virus is spreading faster and more widely than at any other previous point in the past nine months.

"Today I will meet with the priorities implementation committee of cabinet to discuss a series of new measures to reduce the rising spread of COVID-19," Alberta's chief medical officer of health told the media just after 2 p.m. "Based on their decisions, we will provide a detailed update to Albertans tomorrow."

Hinshaw kicked off her news conference with a stark reminder about what is at stake.

"To put it as plainly as possible, this is like a snowball rolling down a hill growing bigger and faster, and it will continue unless we implement strong measures to stop it," she said.

"We must take action. Waiting any longer will impact our ability to care for Albertans in the weeks and months ahead. As chief medical officer of health, my role is to provide advice to government on how to protect the health of Albertans."

The rapidly-rising case numbers is severely straining hospitals and ICU admissions and challenging the health system's ability to deliver care, Hinshaw said.

On Monday, 328 people were being treated for COVID-19 in Alberta hospitals, including 62 in ICU beds. Another five deaths were reported, bringing the total of 476...

Alberta enacts 2nd COVID-19 state of public health emergency. Here’s what it means

Alberta is in a second state of public of health emergency as of Tuesday, after 1,115 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours.

New targeted restrictions were also introduced Tuesday based on the recommendations chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw presented to cabinet on Monday. The measures will be in effect for three weeks and re-evaluated after that.

“These mandatory measures will place new restrictions on social gatherings, worship services, businesses, schools and all Albertans,” Premier Jason Kenney said, adding the restrictions weren’t determined lightly.

“We believe these are the minimum restrictions needed right now to safeguard our health-care system, while avoiding widespread damage to peoples’ livelihood.”
Social gathering restrictions

The first new restriction is aimed at social gatherings, and prohibits any indoor social gathering in any setting, and outdoor gatherings are limited to 10 people, effective immediately.

“Social gatherings are the biggest problem,” Kenney said. “It is the key reason why COVID-19 is winning. These gatherings in the home continue to be the largest form of transmission.”..
