Alert: Outbreak at Swift Current Care Centre

Under the guidance of Consulting Medical Health Officer Dr. David Torr, the Swift Current Care Centre has been placed under outbreak status.
The outbreak status is due to an unidentified respiratory illness within the facility Samples will be sent to the Saskatchewan Disease Control Lab in Regina to confirm the illness. A total of 11 residents are affected at this time. The facility has implemented enhanced cleaning and sanitization practices and is working with public health to rescind the outbreak as quickly as possible.
Visitation at the facility is restricted to end stage of life situations which are handled on a case by case basis. Visitor restrictions are put into effect to reduce the risk of spreading the illness from the faciltiy to the community, and limiting the potential for community illnesses/viruses to be brought into the facility.
The Health Region encourages everyone within the facility and community to be vigilant in hand washing, cough/sneeze etiquette, and to clean commonly touched surfaces.

Outbreak at Gull Lake Special Care Centre

Under the guidance of Dr. David Torr, Consulting Medical Health Officer for the Cypress Health Region, an outbreak has been declared at the Gull Lake Special Care Centre.
This outbreak is due to an unidentified enteric illness. Samples are being collected and will be sent to the Saskatchewan Disease Control Lab in Regina to confirm the illness. As of January 3 a total of 2 residents and 3 staff are experiencing signs and symptoms of the illness.
Visitation is restricted at this facility until further notice. The only exception to this restriction will be in the case where an end of life situation is present. If this occurs, the facility's nurse in charge can be contacted to discuss visiting options that are available. Visitor restrictions are put into effect to reduce the risk of spreading the illness from the facility to the community, and limiting the potential for community illnesses/viruses to be brought into the facility.
The region's Infection Control Team is involved with the outbreak and increased infection control efforts are being implemented at the facility. Every effort will be made to eradicate the illness from within the facility.
It is very important for the public to do their part in reducing the risks of transferring illness to their families and others around them. Everyone should be mindful of washing their hands frequently and properly, staying home when ill, and increasing cleaning efforts in houses and businesses.

Sample Results Confirm Influenza A in Swift Current Care Centre

Following the news of the Swift Current Care Centre being placed under Outbreak status, the sample results have returned from the Saskatchewan Disease Control Lab.

Consulting Medical Health Officer for the Cypress Health Region, Dr. David Torr has confirmed the results tested positive for Influenza A, which is one of the strains identified in the 2012 influenza vaccination.

Those who recieved their immunizations are considered protected, for those who haven't had their shot, they will be available and free until April 2013, to make an appointment you can call 1-866-786-2510, or your local public health office.

In addition to the immunization, it's very important to exercise other infection control practices, such as frequent handwashing, cough/sneeze etiquette, staying home when you are ill and cleaning commonly touched surgaces regularly.
