Provincial health officials have confirmed two more cases of COVID-19 in the province, in addition to a case announced early Friday morning tied to travel to Las Vegas.

The announcement takes Ontario’s total coronavirus case count to 26 cases, with four recoveries.

Seventy-two other people remain under investigation for possible COVID-19 infection.

TORONTO — Today, Dr. David Williams, Chief Medical Officer of Health, confirmed four new positive cases of COVID-19 bringing the total number of confirmed cases in Ontario to 26. Of these, four cases in the province are all resolved, with each of those patients having two consecutive negative tests at least 24 hours apart.

A married man and woman, both in their 60s, were aboard the Grand Princess cruise ship out of San Francisco, California, which travelled to Mexico from February 11-21, 2020. They returned to Canada on February 28. Both individuals were assessed at Trillium Health Partners - Mississauga Hospital where all Infection Protection and Control protocol were followed. They are well and currently recovering at home in self-isolation.

A male in his 50s returned from Iran on February 27 and presented himself to North York General Hospital's emergency department in Toronto on March 3. Another male, in his 40s returned from Las Vegas, Nevada on February 28 and was seen by medical staff at Toronto Western Hospital also in Toronto. Both individuals were assessed and discharged home respectively where they remain in self-isolation with minimal contact with others.

Both Peel Public Health and Toronto Public Health are continuing to work closely with Public Health Ontario in taking immediate precautions to ensure these patients are being safely and appropriately cared for and that other patients, staff and the community are well protected.

As a result of the coordinated efforts of our health care and public health system, all individuals who have tested positive have been quickly assessed and isolated.

At this time, the virus is not circulating locally. However, given the global circumstances, Ontario is actively working with city and health partners to plan for the potential of local spread. The province continues to carefully monitor this situation and encourage residents to stay informed by regularly reviewing credible information sources.

Dr. Williams will provide an update on the situation at the regularly scheduled media briefing Monday, March 9, 2020, at 3:00 p.m. at the Queen's Park media studio.

OTTAWA – The latest patient diagnosed with COVID-19 recently travelled to Las Vegas and used public transit in Toronto for several days before he was tested for the virus, according to the Toronto public health authority.

The man in his 40s was one of two recently confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in Toronto.

“This information is being provided out of an abundance of caution. We’re talking about low-risk situations,” said Dr. Eileen de Villa, Toronto’s top public-health doctor, in a briefing Friday.

Transit riders without COVID-19 symptoms do not need to seek medical help, de Villa said, unless they get a call from her unit...

The Ministry of Health said Friday that six more cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in Ontario, bringing the total in the province to 28. Four of the 28 have recovered, officials say.

The ministry said the new cases include three men — one in his 20s, another in his 40s and the third in his 50s — a couple in their 60s and a 64-year-old woman.

A female in her 60s returned from France on March 2, 2020 and presented herself to Scarborough Health Network - General Site's emergency department, in Toronto, on March 7. A male in his 60s returned from Washington, D.C. on March 3, 2020 and presented himself to North York General Hospital's emergency department, also in Toronto, on March 7.

In both cases, the hospital took all necessary precautions and followed standard operating procedures, including testing and assessment. The patients have been discharged home where they remain in self-isolation. Toronto Public Health is actively engaged in contact tracing and case management.

As a result of the coordinated efforts of our health care and public health system, all individuals who have tested positive have been quickly assessed and isolated.

TORONTO — As COVID-19 evolves, Ontario is taking further steps to inform the public on the status of the virus across the province.

Ontario has been monitoring and reporting on the development of COVID-19 since initial cases of a viral pneumonia were reported in China in late December 2019. Every weekday at 10:30 a.m. Ontario has been updating its dedicated web page with the most up-to-date information on the status of cases in Ontario, including: the number of cases currently under investigation; and the number of confirmed positive, negative and resolved cases.

To enhance these efforts, the web page will now be updated twice a day (10:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. EST), seven days a week. The web page will also now include general information on each new confirmed case of COVID-19, including gender, age, public health unit, hospital (if applicable), where acquired and status. The information provided will reflect what has been confirmed by local public health authorities at that time. This information will be provided in lieu of the news releases the province has been issuing and will be supplemented by additional details provided by individual public health units.

"The health and well-being of the people of Ontario is our top priority," said Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. "Although the risk remains low, we are enhancing our reporting protocols as we continue to take decisive steps to protect the public. Ontarians can be fully confident that we are providing the information they need in order to protect themselves and their families."

Currently, the virus is not circulating locally. However, given the global circumstances, last week Ontario implemented an enhanced response structure to formally bring together experts across the health sector to provide clinical expertise and experience to implement provincial and regional plans. This will ensure the province is ready to contain and respond to a COVID-19 outbreak.

A man from Sudbury, Ont. who attended the recent Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada conference in Toronto has tested positive for COVID-19, health officials said Tuesday.

The man, who is in his 50s, went to the emergency department at Health Sciences North in Sudbury on Saturday. A Hamilton Health Sciences oncologist is the city's first confirmed positive case of COVID-19, says a hospital spokesperson.

On Wednesday, CBC learned that a staff member tested positive for COVID-19 after returning from a trip abroad. Since the doctor's return to work, she was in contact with both cancer patients and staff members.

There have been 93 cases of COVID-19 in Canada so far, with 36 of those in Ontario...

...Speaking about the cancer centre case, Dr. Wes Stephen, executive vice-president and chief operating officer at Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS), said her case was quickly detected and all proper procedures were followed.

"When she began to show symptoms, infection-control protocol was swiftly initiated and she was tested in a safe environment," he added.

"Out of an abundance of caution, last week, Hamilton Health Sciences expanded its criteria for testing beyond the standard case definition to include any travel outside Canada. As a result, this case was identified as quickly as possible. She is now in self-isolation protocol."

During an update Wednesday afternoon, officials said the doctor had been in contact with 14 cancer patients. Staff are now in the process of reaching out to those people and their family members.

Five staff members, one senior oncology resident and three other doctors were also in contact with the physician; they're all currently self-isolating, except for one doctor who has flown out of the country...

The city has announced enhanced measures to combat the spread of COVID-19, including the closure of licensed childcare centres, March break camps and several city facilities.

The measures will go into effect starting 12:01 a.m. Saturday, and would be in place until April 5, Dr. Eileen de Villa, Toronto's medical officer of health, said in a news conference Friday.

De Villa is also advising anyone who travelled anywhere outside of Canada to self-isolate and avoid contact with others for 14 days.

"I am making these recommendations based on the available science and evidence and in consideration of our local circumstances," she said.

"We need to reduce the risk of undetected spread of COVID-19 in people's households, and most importantly, we need to mitigate the impact of this virus and help protect the health of our residents."

The city is also cancelling a slew of programs and spaces, including closing arenas, pools, libraries, community and recreation centres, greenhouses and conservatories, arenas, ski hills event permits and other public spaces and facilities.

Council and committee meetings have also been suspended for the current meeting cycle, as well as public consultations.

City manager Chris Murray said TTC service would continue...

Dr. Miriam Klassen, Medical Officer of Health for Huron Perth Public Health, is confirming the first case of COVID-19 in the Huron-Perth region. The 64-year-old male who resides in St. Marys presented to the emergency department at St. Marys Memorial Hospital on the evening of March 12 with symptoms unrelated to COVID-19. The patient’s condition changed in the emergency department and it was identified that COVID-19 should be considered, so testing and precautions were initiated immediately. He was later transferred to Stratford General Hospital.

The patient recently travelled to Mexico, returning home on March 2. When the patient began feeling sick with unrelated illness on March 7, he began self-isolating at home. Currently the patient is in Stratford General Hospital in serious condition.
