Oxford hit hard by flu bug

WOODSTOCK ? Ontario and Oxford County have been hit hard this season by the flu bug.

To date, there have been 36 lab-confirmed cases of Influenza A in the county, which likely means there are many more cases out there.

"It's been a very busy flu season," said Mary Metcalfe, manager of health protection for the County of Oxford. "We are past the peak, but across Ontario, there was a lot of flu this year."

Metcalfe said 20 of those Oxford County lab-confirmed cases were found in long-term care facilities, with the remainder found elsewhere in the community.

Also, at least ten outbreaks in long-term care facilities were reported, she said. Subsequent testing of lab cases has pointed away from the H1N1 virus, the primary strain of flu that dominated the county last season.

"The ones that have come back from here have been H3N2 strains," Metcalfe said.

Metcalfe said no deaths have been attributed to the flu as the primary cause of death to date. Earlier this year, Eastwood resident Lynda Young died of complications attributed to the H1N1 virus...
