Ontario places more regions in red zone as it reports 1,396 new COVID-19 cases

Ontario is making changes to its colour-coded COVID-19 system and putting several regions into the red "control" zone which contains more severe restrictions, the province announced Friday.

The change comes after Premier Doug Ford's government came under fire in recent days for its system being too lenient, while case counts in Ontario surged to record levels.

Health Minister Christine Elliott announced the following cities and regions will move into the red zone of the province's framework:

Hamilton
Halton
Peel
Toronto
York

Elliott said anyone living in a red (or "control") region should only leave their home for essential purposes.

The minister also announced the following regions will move to the orange (or "restrict") zone:

Brant
Durham
Eastern Ontario
Niagara
Ottawa
Waterloo
Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph

The following regions are moving into the yellow (or "protect") zone:

Haldimand-Norfolk
Huron-Perth
Middlesex-London
Sudbury
Simcoe-Muskoka
Southwestern
Windsor-Essex

The changes come into effect on Monday Nov. 16 at 12:01 am, with the exception of Toronto, which moves to the red zone on Saturday at 12:01 a.m...

Ontario has once again set a new record for the number of COVID-19 cases reported in a 24-hour period as the number of virus-related hospitalizations surpassed 500 in the province.

Provincial health officials confirmed 1,581 new cases today, up from 1,396 on Friday and 1,575 on Thursday.

The rolling seven-day average of new cases is now 1,419, up from 1,013 one week ago.

"Locally, there are 497 new cases in Peel, 456 in Toronto, 130 in York Region and 77 in Ottawa. There are 1,003 more resolved cases and over 44,800 tests completed," Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott tweeted on Saturday.

The test positivity rate today is 4.2 per cent, up from 2.8 per cent one week...

Ontario reported 1,487 new cases of coronavirus on Monday, bringing the provincial total to 95,496.

Monday’s case count is an increase from Sunday which saw 1,248 new infections. On Saturday, 1,581 cases were reported — a record single-day high.

This is the 10th straight day that daily case counts have been above 1,000.

According to Monday’s provincial report, 508 new cases were recorded in Toronto, 392 in Peel Region, 170 in York Region, 67 in Waterloo and 51 in Ottawa.

All other public health units in Ontario reported under 50 new cases...

TORONTO -- On Tuesday, health officials logged 1,249 cases of COVID-19 and 12 more deaths related to the disease. This marks a decrease from the 1,487 infections reported a day earlier.

There were 1,248 cases of the novel coronavirus reported on Sunday, a record-breaking 1,581 on Saturday and 1,487 cases on Monday.

Ontario reported 1,417 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday and 32 new deaths, the highest daily death toll reported since June 19.

But the number of net active infections declined for the first time in weeks, buoyed by strong growth in recoveries.

Ontario reported another 1,210 cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, and 28 more deaths linked to the illness.

The new cases include 361 in Peel Region, 346 in Toronto and 143 in York Region. Premier Doug Ford says information more stringent restrictions will be introduced for the three areas tomorrow.

Dr. Lawrence Loh, medical officer of health in Peel, said this morning that he supports short-term measures to "reduce the number of contacts and interactions" happening daily in the region.

"I do think further closures and restrictions are warranted at this time," he told CBC News Network.

Earlier this week, ICES, a non-profit health-related research institute, published data analysis showing that five neighbourhoods in Peel had test positivity rates north of 15 per cent, considerably beyond the threshold for serious concern about community transmission. While testing levels in Peel have remained relatively stable in recent weeks, ICES said, the region-wide per cent positivity of tests continued to steadily rise...

TORONTO -- Ontario is reporting a dip in the number of new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, but government officials say that a technical error resulted in an underestimated count today and an overestimated count yesterday.

The province issued a statement outlining the error, explaining that the record-breaking 1,589 new cases reported on Monday was overestimated and the 1,009 new cases reported today are underestimated.

Due to the technical issue, Monday’s report included cases registered up until 8 p.m. on Nov. 22 instead of up until 12 p.m. as usual, which led to the two-day error, the province said.

Health officials have not confirmed how many cases should not have been included in Monday’s total and added to today’s total instead. When averaging out new infections reported on both days, Ontario saw 1,299 cases...

TORONTO -- Ontario health officials are reporting a spike in deaths related to COVID-19 as the province adds more than 1,300 new cases of the disease.

Health officials added 1,373 new cases of the novel coronavirus on Wednesday, and 35 more deaths due to the disease. It’s the highest number of deaths reported in a single day since the second wave began in mid-September.

On Monday, the province reported that 19 people had died due to COVID-19, and on Tuesday, the province reported that 14 more people had died. Most of the deaths have involved residents of long-term care homes...

‘Delays and confusion in decision-making’ impacted Ontario’s COVID-19 response: AG

TORONTO – Ontario’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic was slower and more reactive than that of other provinces, hampered by “delays and confusion in decision-making” as public health experts took a secondary role to government officials and politicians, the province’s auditor general said Wednesday.

Outdated provincial emergency plans played a role in slowing down the response in the winter and spring, as did systemic issues such as a lack of laboratory surge capacity and old IT systems, Bonnie Lysyk said in a report.

Lysyk also pointed to an increasingly cumbersome command structure, and one that was not led by public health expertise despite the creation and expansion of a provincial health command table that she says now involves more than 500 people...

COVID-19 growth rates are slowing in Ontario, new provincial modelling shows — but health officials warn the province is not yet seeing the decline in cases that would be needed before any restrictions are loosened.

At a Thursday afternoon news conference, Adalsteinn Brown, co-chair of the Ontario COVID-19 Science Advisory Table, said key indicators for the pandemic are flattening in some regions, but the virus's impact still varies widely across the province.

In Ontario's last round of modelling released weeks ago, officials said the province was looking at a growth rate in daily cases of between three and six per cent. In the last few days, that growth rate has been between zero and one per cent, Brown said.

"It is best described as a fragile or precarious situation," he said.

If Ontario maintains its current growth rate, Brown said, it's expected the province will see a similar number of daily cases by the end of December to what it has seen this week, in and around the 1,500 mark. That's well below a range of 4,000 to 6,500 daily cases that was presented as a possibility in the province's last round of modelling...

Ontario reported a record-high 1,855 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, with officials saying it will be at least two weeks before lockdowns imposed in Toronto and Peel Region have any tangible effect on the province's case numbers.

"There's been a lot of celebrations over the past couple of weeks," Premier Doug Ford said, a message echoed by Health Minister Christine Elliott, who said a rise in cases was expected at this point.

Speaking to reporters Friday, Ford also called on the federal government to provide more clarity around when Ontario can expect to receive vaccines — something he said will be key for retired general Rick Hillier, who is leading the provincial vaccine rollout taskforce, with a paycheque of $20,000 per month plus expenses.

"It was my duty to agree to the premier's request to lead the task force in this war to defeat COVID-19," Hillier said. "We will be ready as of December 31, 2020 to receive the vaccine, no matter when it arrives, and to ensure the people of Ontario are vaccinated.

Hillier also acknowledged that while there will be bumps in the vaccine's rollout, he believes those most at-risk should receive it first...

Ontario reported another 1,708 cases of COVID-19 and 24 more deaths due to COVID-19 on Sunday.

The new cases include 503 in Peel Region, 463 in Toronto and 185 in York Region. There are 1,443 more cases marked as resolved.

The Ontario health ministry says another 53,959 tests were completed in the last 24 hours. Labs are reporting that 3.7 per cent of the tests processed are positive.

Public health officials said this week that they hope to build capacity in the system for up to 100,000 tests daily.

At the province's daily news conference Wednesday, Health Minister Christine Elliott said Ontario has "plateaued at a very high level." She also said case numbers went up after lockdowns were enacted in certain regions "largely because of some of the events in certain communities."

The province should be seeing the results of lockdown period reflected in its case numbers in the next week or so, Elliott said...
