Swine flu will likely result in over 100 fatalities in Finland, predicts Pekka Puska, the Director General of the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL). In an interview with the newspaper Suomenmaa, Puska urges all Finns to take the H1N1 vaccine.
Puska also criticised the non-profit vaccine awareness organisation Rokotusinfo. He accused the group of spreading misinformation and rumours about the vaccine. He added that the rumours have resulted in unfounded fears in many people.
Last week, the organisation accused THL of providing pregnant women with the wrong swine flu vaccine.
Most Finns not keen on vaccine
According to survey commissioned by the YLE current affairs programme Suomi Express, 56 percent of respondents have opted not to take the swine flu vaccine. Another 18 percent say they are unsure about what to do. Just 26 percent of those polled say they intend to get the jab.
The survey was taken before news broke of the first swine flu death in Finland.
Pollster Taloustutkimus carried out the survey. The margin of error was 4.1 percentage points.
