Chile Health Min: 18 Patients Under Observation For Swine Flu

SANTIAGO -(Dow Jones)- There are 18 patients under observation in Chile for symptoms of swine influenza, but none of them have been confirmed, Health Minister Alvaro Erazo said Tuesday.

Three possible cases detected over the weekend have already been ruled out, Erazo said.

The 18 patients are spread out throughout the country and most recently arrived from Mexico with flu symptoms.

Swine flu seems to be spreading wide across the Americas with Chile now reporting eight possible cases of the deadly virus.

Deputy health secretary Jeanette Vega said two of those suspected of being afflicted with the virus returned from Mexico on April 17.

"It is most likely that the tests ... will come back negative," said Ricardo Quezada, director of a Santiago hospital where four of the suspect cases are being investigated.

Late Sunday, the Mexican Health Ministry announced that the number of both suspected and confirmed fatalities from the flu has reached 103, with hundreds of cases being observed.

The number sharply rose on Monday, when Health Minister Jose Angel Cordova announced the "probable" swine flu death toll at 152 but noted that Mexico's National Health Service had not yet approved the number.

In the United States, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said the Department of Health and Human Services would declare a public health emergency in the country in the wake of the epidemic.

To date, 20 cases of the swine influenza type 'A' have been officially reported in five states across the US.

Swine flu is a contagious respiratory disease that originated in pigs, which in the past has had very limited transference to humans. It is not yet known how easily the virus spreads between people.
