I'm not sure about the translator here, but might the mention of "gas water heater shower" be suspecting a carbon monoxide poisoning due to the water heater in his dormitory?

Good point. I think natural gas would be a better translation than carbon monoxide, although a gas water heater could produce either one. But obviously, until H5N1 is ruled out, better safe than sorry.
