Southern Hemisphere flu rise; H5N8 outbreaks in Korea

[h=3]WHO notes increased flu activity Down Under, in South America[/h] Influenza activity is increasing in Australia, New Zealand, and South America, the World Health Organization (WHO) said in an update yesterday.
Flu in Australia and New Zealand continued to increase in recent weeks, with H3N2 and influenza B both circulating, the agency said. It added that flu activity has increased in temperature South America, with H3N2 and 2009 H1N1 predominating. Influenza there is generally following seasonal trends but at lower levels than in previous year. Paraguay, however, saw a sharp jump.
Low levels of flu were reported in western and temperate Asia, with flu B and 2009 H1N1 co-circulating. Northern China reported a slight increase in H3N2 detections. Southern Asia reported elevated but decreasing flu activity, with H3N2 predominant, and Southeast Asia reported low levels, with H3N2 also predominating but some influenza B circulating.
Of 2,206 specimens worldwide that tested positive for flu, 76% were influenza A and 24% influenza B. Of the "A" viruses, 87% were H3N2. Almost all "B" viruses belong to the Yamagata lineage, which is the strain in this year's trivalent (three-strain) vaccine.

[h=3]South Korea reports 110 H5N8 outbreaks affecting 3 million poultry[/h] South Korea today reported 110 outbreaks of H5N8 avian flu affecting more than 3 million poultry, with some events dating back to last fall, according to a report posted by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).
The outbreaks involved 3,036,319 ducks and chickens in the western and southern parts of the country. Only 236 bird deaths were reported across all the outbreaks, and some involved no H5N8 cases, but all involved positive tests.
Dates of outbreak onset range from Sep 26, 2014, to Jun 10, 2015. Flock sizes vary from just a few dozen poultry to hundreds of thousands. South Korea had previously reported 52 H5N8 outbreaks in the country last fall through early March.
