Avian flu in Minnesota; H5N2 in Taiwan, H5N6 in Vietnam

[h=3]More avian flu reported in Minnesota's hardest-hit county[/h] The county at the epicenter of Minnesota's avian influenza crisis, Kandiyohi, has been hit by another probable outbreak, its 40th, state officials reported today.
The Minnesota Board of Animal Health said the outbreak is a presumptive positive one on a turkey farm, with information on the flock size pending, according to an update from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS). Kandiyohi, the state's top turkey-producing county, is about 90 miles west of Minneapolis.
The state now counts 108 affected farms with more than 8.87 million birds in 23 counties. The bird count doesn't include farms where flock sizes have not yet been reported.
All the affected farms remain under quarantine, the statement said. Quarantines have been canceled, however, in the control zones surrounding outbreak sites in two counties, Pope and Lac Qui Parle.

[h=3]Avian flu strikes poultry in Taiwan, Vietnam[/h] H5N2 avian flu has hit two poultry flocks comprising a combined 59,220 birds in Taiwan, and H5N6 struck a small village flock in Vietnam, according to separate reports posted yesterday by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).
The Taiwan outbreaks involve flocks of 10,540 and 48,680 native chickens in Yunlin County near the island's west coast. The virus killed a total of 18,211 poultry, and the remaining 41,009 were culled to prevent disease spread.
The outbreaks began on May 23 and May 25. Officials have begun the usual response steps. Taiwan has been plagued by numerous H5N2 and H5N8 avian flu outbreaks this year.

In Vietnam, H5N6 avian flu struck a village flock of 20 birds in Dak Nong province in the southern part of the country. The disease killed 4 of the birds, and the other 16 were euthanized as a control measure.
The outbreak began on May 27. Vietnam reported two H5N6 outbreaks in April, as well as several in 2014.
