About half of Americans with asthma got a flu vaccine in 2010-11
Flu vaccination coverage among US patients with asthma was almost 50% in the 2010-11 season, fully 12 percentage points higher than among those without asthma, researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported today in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR).
Asthma was the most common underlying condition for those hospitalized with pandemic 2009 H1N1 in 2009, the authors said.
CDC scientists analyzed data from the National Health Interview Survey to assess vaccination levels in the first year after its vaccine advisory panel expanded flu vaccine recommendations to all people 6 months old and older.
Those 2 years old and older with asthma had a 49.6% vaccination rate, compared with 37.5% for those without asthma and 38.5% among all people. The rate for asthma patients climbed from 36% 5 years earlier, the CDC said.
Vaccine uptake among those with asthma who had an asthma attack in the preceding year did not differ significantly from uptake among people with asthma who did not.

Multiyear study finds 57% flu vaccine effectiveness in Scotland
Trivalent inactivated influenza vaccines were 57% effective in preventing lab-confirmed flu in Scottish patients, 94% of whom were in at-risk groups, according to multiyear results published in the journal Health Service and Delivery Research.
UK, Dutch, and French researchers analyzed data from nine pre-pandemic seasons, 2000 to 2009, for their observational cohort study. The study included 274,071 patients, 256,474 of whom (93.6%) were listed in at-risk categories.
Vaccine effectiveness (VE) in preventing influenza confirmed by polymerase chain reaction was 57.1% (95% confidence interval [CI], 31.3% to 73.3%) among all age-groups. VE dropped to a statistically insignificant 18.8% (95% CI, ?103.7% to 67.6%) in patients aged 65 years or older. It was 59.6% (95% CI, 21.9% to 79.1%) for adults and kids 65 years or younger who were at risk of serious flu complications.
Adjusted VE was 16.3% (95% CI, 5.7% to 26.0%) for reducing primary care visits for flulike illnesses, 19.3% (95% CI, 8.3% to 29.1%) for reducing hospitalizations for flu and pneumonia, and 37.9% (95% CI, 29.5% to 45.4%) for reducing deaths due to flu and pneumonia.
