11:02 a.m. From School District 11: Chipeta Elementary and Trailblazer Elementary have sustained smoke damage, but both schools are still standing.

10:57 a.m. The Greater Colorado Springs Chamber & EDC State of the City luncheon scheduled for Thursday has been postponed because of the fire. A new date has not been decided.

A stubborn and towering wildfire jumped firefighters' perimeter lines in the hills overlooking Colorado Springs, forcing frantic mandatory evacuation notices for more than 9,000 residents, destroying an unknown number of homes and partially closing the grounds of the sprawling U.S. Air Force Academy. Heavy smoke and ash billowed from the mountain foothills west of the city. Bright yellow and orange flames flared, often signaling another home lost to the Waldo Canyon fire, the No. 1 priority for the nation's firefighters. Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, who flew over the 9-square-mile fire late Tuesday, said, "It was like looking at the worst movie set you could imagine. "It's almost surreal. You look at that, and it's like nothing I've seen before."

COLORADO SPRINGS ? Four huge tankers capable of dropping as much as 3,000 gallons of flame retardant material in less than five seconds began attacking the Waldo Canyon fire west of Colorado Springs Monday.

The Modular Airborne Firefighting System C-130 tankers were staging at nearby Peterson Air Force Base. The C130s were requested Sunday by the U.S. Forest Service.

"These are important," said Terry McCann, a representative for the Rocky Mountain Area Coordination Center. "They can drop 3,000 gallons of fire retardant in five seconds. They're an important asset, a very important asset."

Waldo Canyon is the first fire for which the tankers have been called to service.

"We're so proud to do this mission," said Col. James Van Housen. "As soon as we saw that first column of smoke, the reservists started volunteering, before we even got called out..."

At that time, a decision will have been made and will be announced about lifting the evacuation order if it is safe to do so.
