DENVER (KKTV) - The Colorado Department of Public Health said a case of measles was confirmed in Denver in an unvaccinated infant under 1 year old.

Officials said the infant recently traveled with family to Chihuahua, Mexico, where a measles outbreak is ongoing.

This comes after an unvaccinated adult tested positive for measles on March 22. Officials said they do not believe these two cases are connected.

Officials said babies typically begin getting the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine between 12 and 15 months old.

Officials urged anyone unvaccinated who has visited the Denver Health Emergency Department at 777 Bannock St. Pavilion A on Sunday between 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. should monitor symptoms for 21 days and avoid gatherings or high-risk settings.​..

Adult measles case confirmed in a Coloradan in Archuleta County

Denver (April 8, 2025) — The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, the Archuleta County Public Health Department (ACPHD), and the Silver Thread Public Health District have confirmed a case of measles in an Archuleta County adult resident. The person’s vaccination history is unknown at present. The current evidence shows that the case is likely not linked to the cases in Pueblo or Denver. The person sought care at a medical clinic in their community on Monday, March 31, and was contagious from March 26 - April 3.

“This case does not appear to be linked to the other cases reported in Colorado and the individual did not travel outside of Colorado, which leaves open the possibility of community transmission,” said Dr. Rachel Herlihy, state epidemiologist and deputy chief medical officer at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. “We urge Coloradans to monitor for symptoms if they may have been exposed, and to make sure they are up to date on their MMR vaccinations.”​

Colorado has a total of three confirmed measles cases in 2025. The confirmed cases have been in Pueblo, Denver, and Archuleta counties.

The second case of measles has been confirmed in Denver, according to city and county health officials, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in Colorado to four.

Health officials didn't provide many details about the latest case in Denver, other than to say the person is an adult and they contracted the virus from the first person in the city who got it; a baby who was too young to have been vaccinated who had recently travelled to an area of Chihuahua, Mexico, which is experiencing a measles outbreak. The person has been in public health quarantine during the infectious period, according to the Denver Department of Public Health and Environment.​..

DENVER — An unvaccinated individual infected with measles who arrived at DIA from an international flight before staying for the night at a nearby hotel and boarding a domestic flight the next morning may have exposed thousands of people to the highly contagious virus last week, state health officials said Thursday.

The individual arrived at Gate A-27 in concourse A at 5:10 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13, walked across the bridge to international customs, and picked up their bag at the international baggage claim 3 on the main terminal, according to officials from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE).

The unvaccinated traveler then rode the Quality Inn and Suites shuttle to the Quality Inn and Suites Denver International Airport hotel at around 6 p.m. before checking in and riding the elevator to their room.

State health officials said the infected person spent the night at the hotel and checked out the next morning, leaving the hotel at around 5 a.m. before taking the hotel's shuttle to the airport, where they arrived about 30 minutes later. The individual then passed through the main terminal, the train to the gates, and concourse B before boarding a flight that took off from Gate B-86 at around 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 14.
Dates and locations of potential exposure

CDPHE officials said Thursday the individual may have exposed thousands of people at the airport between 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13, and between 5:30-10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 14.

Inside the shuttle to and from the Quality Inn and Suites hotel near DIA, the unvaccinated traveler may have exposed people between 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13, and between 5-7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 14.

At the hotel, guests could have been exposed between 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13, to 7 a.m. on Wednesday, May 14.​..

Measles outbreak reaches El Paso County, bringing Colorado's total to 10 cases

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KOAA) — El Paso County has reported its first measles cases, bringing Colorado's total to 10 cases in 2025.

The Department of Public Health and Environment says the two new cases involve unvaccinated adults who were at the Denver International Airport around the same time on May 14.

This brings the number of cases in the state connected to the same out-of-state traveler to 6.

The two new patients were not traveling together but were in the vicinity. A third passenger who tested positive the day before is recovering in Arapahoe County.

In El Paso County, the patients may have been at the Maverick gas station on Airport Road the morning of May 28 and the King Soopers on Uintah on May 31.​..

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - Colorado health officials announced Sunday they have confirmed measles in two El Paso County residents.

According to the Colorado Department of Public Health, and El Paso County Public Health, those residents were unvaccinated and are recovering at home.

Health officials said anyone at the following locations at the following times should monitor themselves for measles symptoms for the next 21 days and consider avoiding public gatherings:

​DENVER — Colorado health officials on Wednesday confirmed the state’s 12th measles case of the year as the number of people who’ve contracted the virus from an infected individual at Denver International Airport continues to grow.

The state’s latest case — a Denver adult vaccinated against measles — was a passenger on Turkish Airlines flight 201, which arrived at Denver International Airport on May 13, state health officials said in a news release.

Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) officials said seven of the state’s 12 cases have been tied to an unvaccinated traveler from out-of-state who was infectious when he arrived in Denver from Turkey. Four of those seven were passengers on the flight and the remaining three were at the airport when they were exposed to the virus the following day.​..

Two shots of the MMR vaccine are thought to give an individual a 97% chance of avoiding a measles infection when exposed.

And that number has a near-echo in the most recent measles outbreaks nationwide — 92% of the people infected have been unvaccinated or had an unknown vaccination status, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

But, in Colorado, six out of 16 infections have been in people who are fully vaccinated — what are known as breakthrough cases. That’s more than a third.

So, what gives? Does the vaccine work worse at altitude or something?

No, said a bunch of experts The Colorado Sun spoke with.

“I wouldn’t want people to get discouraged,” said Dr. Michelle Barron, the senior medical director of infection prevention and control at UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital.

Instead, the experts offered up some possible explanations for why a higher percentage of vaccinated people in Colorado have been infected — and the answers involve airplanes, testing … and counterintuitive math...

Health officials confirmed a new case of measles Monday. A child who has been hospitalized is the state’s 17th case of the virus.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and the Adams County Health Department confirmed the case in a child younger than 5 years old from Adams County, according to a press release. The child remains hospitalized.​..

...The state has now recorded 17 measles cases this year, with five recorded in residents of Arapahoe County, four in Denver and El Paso counties and one each in Adams, Archuleta, Boulder and Pueblo counties.

Five people have been hospitalized with measles this year in Colorado; no one has died.

Among Colorado’s cases, 10 are associated with an out-of-state traveler who flew while infectious.​..

CDPHE adds measles to public wastewater surveillance dashboard

​Denver (Oct. 16, 2025) — The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment today announced the addition of measles wastewater surveillance data to its publicly available Wastewater Surveillance Data Dashboard. The expansion follows a successful pilot program that demonstrated the effectiveness of wastewater surveillance as an early warning tool for detecting measles.

The pilot program, which began in May, allowed public health officials to evaluate the testing methods and develop protocols for using the data to support a timely public health response. While in the pilot phase, a measles wastewater signal was detected in Grand Junction before any clinical cases were confirmed. This allowed CDPHE to alert local health officials in Mesa County.

“The ability to detect viruses in wastewater before we see clinical cases allows us to be proactive in our public health response,” said Allison Wheeler, Wastewater Surveillance Unit Manager at CDPHE. “This successful pilot gives us the confidence to make this information publicly available, providing Coloradans with another layer of information about disease in their communities.”​

The update aligns with recent updates to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention measles wastewater dashboard and provides viral detection capacity for each area in the state. This information can assist health care providers and public health agencies in the allocation of resources and allows the general public to assess their risk of disease.

The addition of measles data expands the existing wastewater surveillance dashboard, which already provides information on a variety of viruses, including SARS-CoV-2, influenza A and B, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), enterovirus D68 (EV-D68), and mpox.

Confirmed measles infection reported in Montezuma County, 32nd case in Colorado this year

Public health officials have identified a case of measles in a Montezuma County resident in southwest Colorado.

According to the state health department, it marks the state's 32nd case of the year, far more than any recent year.

It comes as the nation has seen a huge rise in cases. For the first time in 25 years, the U.S. could lose its measles-free status.

The state and Montezuma County health departments say the case is in a school-aged child. They had not received the MMR vaccine that protects against measles, mumps, and rubella. The child developed symptoms after recently traveling to an area of another state where there is an ongoing measles outbreak. Health officials are issuing an alert about potential community exposures between Nov. 5 and 11 in the towns of Cortez and Mancos.

People there should monitor for symptoms and consider skipping public gatherings or high-risk settings through Thanksgiving until Dec. 4. Monitoring for symptoms is especially important for people who have not been vaccinated with the MMR vaccine.​..

Second case of measles is confirmed in Montezuma County

A young Montezuma County resident has come down with measles. This is the second case of measles in the county this year. The child, who is not of school age, was not vaccinated, according to the county’s public information officer, Vicki Shaffer.

The first case occurred in early November in a school-aged youngster who also was not vaccinated and had traveled to a place outside Colorado where an outbreak was going on. However, this one reportedly involves someone who has not traveled outside the state.

Neither child has been hospitalized, according to Shaffer.

“The lack of a clear source of infection suggests that unidentified measles cases may be occurring in or traveling through the Cortez area,” Shaffer said in a press release. “Montezuma County Public Health is investigating the case.”

Measles, which is spread by coughing or sneezing, is one of the most easily transmitted diseases in the world.

According to the press release, anyone who was at Cold Stone Creamery, 215 S. Sligo, in Cortez on Wednesday, Nov. 26, between 3:30 and 6 p.m. may have been exposed to it. Symptoms could develop through Dec 17.​..

Colorado records 36th measles case of the year, state’s epidemiologist says vaccination provides the best protection

Colorado recorded three new measles cases on Monday, bringing the total for the year to 36, far surpassing totals from previous years.

They come as the nation has seen a dramatic increase in cases. For the first time in a quarter century, the U.S. could lose its measles-free status.

One case was in a Weld County resident, a school-aged child who had not received the measles, mumps, and rubella, or MMR, vaccine, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and the Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment. It's the first case reported in that county this year.

Those agencies, in a statement, said the child developed measles symptoms after traveling to part of another state where there is an ongoing measles outbreak. They say there are no known public exposure locations associated with the case.

Two new cases have also been confirmed in residents of Montezuma County in southwest Colorado. They are unvaccinated household contacts of a previously confirmed case. Both have been in quarantine during their infectious period, so there are no known public exposure locations associated with the cases. Vaccinated traveler with measles at DIA prompts exposure alert

DENVER — A traveler with a confirmed case of measles visited Denver International Airport earlier this month, though the risk of transmission is low because the traveler was vaccinated, the state health department said on Tuesday.

The out-of-state-traveler was at DIA on the evening of Dec. 12, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE). They arrived at Gate B45 in the B Concourse at 7:24 p.m. and departed from Gate B84 in the B Concourse at 9:41 p.m...
