State health officials confirmed the first pediatric death of the 2026-2027 flu season.
CDPHE said flu activity across the state is increasing early this year, with Colorado hospitals reporting a growing number of positive flu tests and flu-related hospitalizations.
The early rise comes after a record-breaking 2025-2026 flu season that saw unprecedented hospitalizations across Colorado and was the state’s most severe pediatric flu season on record, according to CDPHE. During last year’s respiratory virus season, Colorado recorded 5,931 flu-related hospitalizations. That was the highest annual total since the state began tracking that data in 2004. A record 1,169 of those hospitalizations were in children, and eight children in Colorado died.
