26,704 cases of dengue in Costa Rica during 2013

With this figure, Costa Rica almost equals the 26,808 cases recorded throughout 2012

AUGUST 16, 2013 - 6:55 PM

Costa Rica recorded 26,704 dengue cases so far in 2013, a figure very close to that accumulated throughout 2012, and the Health authorities fear that is going to set a record for the country.

The director of the Ministry of Health Surveillance, Mary Ethel Trejos, told Efe that until last August 10 recorded 26,704 cases of suspected dengue and 5 people died from the virus transmitted by the mosquito Aedes aegypti. With this figure, Costa Rica almost equals the 26,808 cases recorded throughout 2012 and to continue the trend could overcome the country's record of 37,214 patients in 2005. Trejos said "it's possible" that the number of patients exceeds 2005, but said that first you have to wait for the results to shed prevention campaigns conducted by the Ministry of Health, in particular a "contingency plan" that started today.
