PANAMA, PANAMA .- Officials from eight countries in Latin under the auspices of the United States met today in Panama City to develop strategies to address the so-called second wave of human influenza virus.
"The global concern is that the epidemic recrudescence not because we are in the second wave, but because there are changes in the virus mutating and make us more aggressive and makes us more resilient," said Health Minister Franklin Vergara.
At a press conference, the official said the Washington-based Institute of the Americas U.S. Southern Command and U.S. Army support the one-day forum in Panama with the assistance of officials from Latin America.
The International Symposium "Health for the Americas: Pandemic Response influence" is intended to improve the level of government responses to disease and sharing strategies for prevention.
He said that in the case of Panama, since early July, filed a second wave of avian AH1N1, with a doubling of cases (over 650) with seven deaths, one each week.
He noted that the main feature is that the virus appears more aggressive, forcing more people to be hospitalized.
"Unfortunately we have entered a state of confidence of the population, which is not good, that virus is here to stay and the only way to decrease it is not infecting more people," Vergara said.
He asserted that there is concern among the authorities in the region by warnings that evil can cause death of some 90 million people worldwide.
In the case of vaccines, stated that they are ready, but will be available to countries by the end of the year.
