Dad died of organ failure hours after seeing GPs
doctors who treated him have been cleared of fault

An Inverness father-of-two died of multiple organ failure just hours after he was seen by doctors.

But the GPs who treated him ? and missed symptoms of pneumonia ? have been cleared of any fault by the Scottish Public Services Ombudsman.

Ramsay Ebrihem, 30, died on February 11 last year at Raigmore Hospital after suffering brain damage and other complications.

He contracted pneumonia which developed into sepsis ? an infection of his blood and body tissues ? while his kidneys also failed.

Mr Ebrihem, of Bruce Gardens, first attended his GP on January 22 and saw two more doctors in the following four days.

He was described as feverish and ?looking miserable?.

But pneumonia and sepsis were only diagnosed when Mr Ebrihem?s fiancee, Kayren Nairn, took him to Raigmore Hospital just hours after he saw the third GP, who prescribed antibiotics for a chest infection.

Mr Ebrihem suffered a cardiac arrest and was admitted to intensive care.

Miss Nairn lodged a complaint that her fiancee?s symptoms were not investigated properly and that doctors failed to diagnose sepsis.

She said that Mr Ebrihem?s death could have been avoided had doctors administered antibiotics sooner or arranged his admission to hospital.

The complaint was investigated by the Scottish Public Services Ombudsman, Jim Martin, who has announced that doctors gave appropriate treatment.

Mr Martin said that he saw nothing in the evidence to criticise the practice, which was not identified in the judgement, and made no recommendations.

He added that he understood why a complaint was made against the practice because ?a previously fit young man died after a flu-type illness?.

Miss Nairn was not available for comment yesterday.

NHS Highland said that it was a ?difficult and sad case?.

A spokeswoman added: ?We are satisfied that the practice took the matter seriously and carried out a significant event analysis to see whether lessons could be learned.?
