Taipei, July 29 (CNA) Ten members of a Taiwan religious group have been infected with dengue fever while taking part in volunteer relief efforts in Myanmar in the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis, marking the first case of mass overseas dengue fever infections to be recorded in Taiwan in recent years, a Centers for Disease Control (CDC) official said Tuesday.

The cases were discovered after one of the patients, a 48-year-old Taipei County woman, sought treatment earlier this month at the Far Eastern Memorial Hospital and was diagnosed July 18 with dengue fever, according to CDC Deputy Director-General Shih Wen-yi.

A subsequent investigation conducted by health authorities found that she and 10 other members of her group had visited Myanmar to help with the aftermath of the disaster, and that 10 of the 11-member mission had been infected with the disease in Myanmar and had already fallen ill while in the Southeast Asian country, Shih said.

The patients were aged between 48 and 87 and come from Taipei County, Taipei City, Taoyuan County and Changhua County, Shih said.

The CDC official said the center is still awaiting the results of a third test on the remaining member of the mission, who tested negative for dengue fever in two previous tests.

Shih said the CDC had also notified local health authorities to check other people who might have had contact with the 10 patients after their return to Taiwan to make sure they are not infected with the disease, which is contracted through the bite of the mosquito that carries the disease.

Ten relief workers brought dengue fever back from Myanmar after providing humanitarian aid there, the Center for Disease Control said on Tuesday.

It is the first recently recorded case of the collective import of dengue fever from overseas, CDC deputy director Shih Wen-yi (施文儀) told reporters.
The case came to the CDC's attention when a 48-year-old woman from Taipei County was diagnosed with dengue fever on July 18, and hospital staff learned she had visited Myanmar, Shih said.
The woman was a member of a group of 11 religious volunteers who traveled to the Southeast Asian country to provide humanitarian relief in the wake of Cyclone Nargis, which left thousands dead in May.
An investigation showed that ten members of the group had contracted dengue fever, Shih said. The group was composed of seven men and four women ranging in age from 48 to 87, and six of them live in the Taipei area, three in Taoyuan County, and two in Central Taiwan's Changhua County, Shih said.
The eleventh member was tested twice, but both times, the tests turned up negative, the CDC official said.
The same group was originally planning to return to Myanmar in September to continue its relief activities, Shih said. On Wednesday, organizers confirmed that some sites would be restricted, dashing expectations of journalists attending the August 8-24 Games that China would allow them free access to the Internet.
Most of the websites that are inaccessible have long been blocked in China, which vigorously polices the Internet to restrict access to information it deems politically sensitive.
Here is a list of some of the organizations whose websites are affected.
* Amnesty International. The London-based group released a report on Monday slamming China for failing to honor its Olympic human rights pledges. It also launched a special "The China Debate" website ( www.thechinadebate.org/en ) focused on the Beijing Games' human rights legacy.
* Apple Daily: The Chinese-language website of the daily Hong Kong newspaper is blocked. The populist broadsheet is known for feisty political coverage and taking a pro-democracy line. ( here )
* Falun Gong. Websites relating to the spiritual group Falun Gong that has been banned in China since 1999, such as the Epoch Times, ( en.epochtimes.com ), have long been inaccessible.

Dog bites in humans can lead to rabies. The report finds that respiratory illnesses and dog bites are more common than contracting exotic diseases.

Other common ailments seen while being in China were diarrhoea, sprains and strains, and skin conditions such as eczema and insect stings.

The report would act as an advisory for travellers to Beijing next month. It also assists travel medicine experts and clinics around the world to better advise their patients about prevention during pre-travel visits and consultations.

'People tend to let their guard down and not use common sense while travelling, many times not considering they may be putting their health at risk,' said Phyllis Kozarsky, professor of medicine (infectious diseases) at Emory University School of Medicine.

The report analysed health outcomes associated with travel over the past 10 years to China and two other regions of Asia - Southeast Asia and India.

The data were collected by more than 40 tropical medicine clinics worldwide, all part of the GeoSentinel Surveillance Network. The surveillance network, supported by the Centre for Diseases Control and Prevention, US, records health trends associated with travel to foreign destinations.

The report found that respiratory illnesses, such as the common cold, bronchitis, pneumonia and asthma were the primary diagnoses of those seeking medical care, and the main cause of hospitalisation while travelling in China.

Dog bites and diarrhoea were the most frequent complaints for travellers receiving post-travel care back at home. There were only a few cases of exotic diseases diagnosed during the 10-year period.

These findings have been published in the July issue of the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.
