You don't need dates to make datepalm juice
I see all kinds of speculations regarding datepalm juice, dates and bats. I would like to add mine.
You don't need dates to make the juice: you need the tree. You drain it. The juice is fermenting very fast and produces some alcohol.
For instance: in Tunisia they call the datepalm juice "legmi" . You have all kinds of legmi: with and without alcohol. Alcohol is not forbidden in Tunisia. However I can imagine drinks with alcohol are taboo in orthodox islamic countries like Saudi Arabia. This could play a role in the delay in reporting.
After fermentation, men sit together and drink. Typically out of sight. It is mostly men who are infected with NCoV in Saudi Arabia. However limited H2H infection is possible and likely, just like the Nipah virus.

It seems to me the bats can pollute the juice, during draining. The bats were are talking about are not fruitbats. They are insect hunters, they hunt and rest in the trees.
Some alcohol won't inactivate the virus, not strong enough?
