Dead, dying owls likely victims of northern Sask. summer fires

Young snowy owls appear to be the latest victims of the massive forest fires that ravaged northern Saskatchewan this summer.
Ten birds ? some dead, some weak ? have been brought to the province?s conservation officers in the last 10 days.
Daryl Minter, spokesman for the Ministry of the Environment, said his department suspects the summer?s forest fires are to blame.
The unusually high numbers of dead and dying snowy owls appear to have damaged respiratory systems, likely caused by exposure to heavy smoke during critical periods of development, he said. The weakened young birds are dying as they begin their migration south.
