NEW DELHI: H1N1 influenza is back to haunt Delhi after a gap of three years. The disease, which gained epidemic proportions in 2009, has claimed three lives so far this year. At least 57 people have taken ill to it, according to government data.

Path labs and hospitals say there is a sudden increase in the number of patients seeking blood tests and treatment for the disease, characterized by symptoms such as sore throat, body ache and upper respiratory infection.

"The sudden rise in swine flu cases is a matter of concern. We have issued directions to all the designated hospitals to follow the H1N1 protocol, including readying isolation wards with dedicated staff. The availability of Tamiflu medicines at all centres is being ensured," state health minister A K Walia said.

Doctors at AIIMS, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Apollo and Max Hospital, Saket confirmed that they have been getting regular cases of swine flu this year. "We have got more than 13 confirmed cases in the last one month. Five of these patients are still hospitalized," said Dr Aroop Basu, senior consultant chest medicine at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. He said two patients are in serious condition and they have been put on ventilator support.

Swine flu has made a comeback and reportedly claimed three victims in the Capital this year. Fifty-seven such cases have already been confirmed by the health department.

The H1N1 influenza virus, also known as swine flu, affected thousands of people in 2009-10 in the city.
The hospitals in the city have started reporting cases, allegedly with symptoms of the virus such as running nose, cough, etc.

Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital has about five suspected cases of the disease undergoing treatment in the isolation ward.

Three of the cases ? two men and a woman ? were admitted to the hospital on Wednesday alone.

New Delhi: Four people have reportedly died because of swine flu in the national capital region. The Delhi government has confirmed that three people have died in its hospitals, while one person has died in Gurgaon.

New Delhi: With five deaths and 60 cases reported so far this year, swine flu is back to haunt Delhi. There has been a spurt in those diagnosed with H1N1 virus.

"In 2011-12, we were getting sporadic cases. This time the surge has been more, definitely much more than 2011-12, though the number of cases is definitely less as compared to 2009, possibly because of the extreme cold that Delhi witnessed," said Dr (Wing Commander) Arup Basu, Senior consultant, chest diseases, Gangaram hospital.

Apart from Delhi, there has been a spike in swine flu cases in recent times in states like Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan. With 54 deaths, Rajasthan has seen the maximum casualties in this phase, followed by Haryana with 13 and Punjab with nine.

Swine Flu grasping heavily over Delhi

With 9 new patients recorded of Swine Flu on Sunday in New Delhi, the total number of people infected by the Influenza A (H1N1) virus has gone to 73 in just January and February 2013.

1 death in January and 3 deaths in February (till Sunday) have taken the death toll to a total of 4.

39 cases were recorded in January and 34 cases have been recorded so far in February.

Last year, there were only 4 cases reported during the same period. In 2012, a total of 78 Swine Flu cases were recorded in the entire year with only 1 death.

A K Walia, Delhi Health minister has said that Delhi is completely prepared to fight the disease. "Medicines have been arranged and are in adequate supply. We have also had a meeting with hospitals with regard to testing facilities and that has been arranged."

121 swine flu cases, docs blame spurt on long winter

The number of swine flu cases in the Capital reported this year rose to 121 on Monday, prompting experts to blame the sudden surge of the figure to a winter that just doesn?t seem to end.
In contrast, only four cases of the disease were reported in the past two years in the city. But
a prolonged winter has allowed the virus to spread, though it doesn?t appear to be as virulent as it was during the 2009 outbreak.

?The air is always loaded with viruses. There are certain weather changes that help the swine flu virus grow fast. I believe the rain, wind and moisture have helped the swine flu virus grow this year and that?s why we are getting so many cases,? said Dr SP Byotra, chairman, department of internal medicine, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.

The hospital was one of the first that reported cases of the disease. However, doctors say that only one in 10 cases need hospitalisation.

One death, 33 more swine flu cases in Delhi


NEW DELHI, A swine flu patient died while 33 people tested positive for the Influenza A ( H1N1) virus here, taking the toll to four and total number of cases to 154 this year, an official said.

"Thirty-three people where tested positive for swine flu and one death has been reported today (Tuesday) from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital," a doctor of the Delhi Health Service (DHS) told IANS.

According to doctors, there has been a sudden spurt in the number of cases this year. In January alone, there was one death and 39 cases, while February so far has seen three deaths and 115 cases.

According to Delhi government, only 78 cases and one death were reported in 2012.

Fourth H1N1 victim in city: 15-yr-old dies at Ganga Ram

Another suspected swine flu-related death reported from RML, Walia calls meeting.

A 15-year-old girl who was diagnosed with swine flu died on Monday, taking the death toll due to the H1N1 virus to four in the national capital.

This is the fourth confirmed death due to the virus since January 1. Another death, reported from Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital on Tuesday, is also suspected to be caused due to complications arising from H1N1.

The girl, who is the first minor to succumb to the illness this season, was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on February 3. Hospital authorities said the girl died of acute respiratory distress syndrome ? a severe respiratory disorder commonly associated with the virus. The girl was on ventilator support and doctors said they had tried to contain her symptoms for over a week.

52 more swine flu cases, docs say basic hygiene will help control virus





Fifty-two people tested positive for swine flu on Wednesday, taking the total number of people diagnosed with the virus since the beginning of the year to 206. Doctors said basic preventive measures can help avoid the disease.

Vice-chairperson in respiratory medicine at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital Dr Arup Kumar Basu said: "H1N1 is a droplet infection, so preventive measures include basic hygiene like frequently washing your hands and using a handkerchief if you are coughing or sneezing. If you have a fever or any flu-like symptoms, it is advisable to go to a doctor within 3 to 5 days."

Considering the contagious nature of the infection, people diagnosed with the virus, or even suspected patients, should use a mask or cover their face. Doctors said proper nutritional intake, including food products rich in multivitamins and anti-oxidants, and drinking fluids is important.

Swine flu claims 1 more life in capital, 47 fresh cases


A 27-year-old man succumbed to swine flu in New Delhi on Wednesday, taking the number of deaths due to the H1N1 virus in the capital this year to five.

The man was admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital three days back in a serious condition, hospital sources said. RML
Hospital is one of the 23 designated hospitals identified by the Delhi government for treatment of the ailment.

With today's death, the number of people who have died due to swine flu has increased to five. Meanwhile, 47 fresh cases of swine flu were detected today taking the total number to 253.

Delhi health minister AK Walia reviewed the situation with top officials of his department and issued direction to them to monitor the situation constantly.

He expressed hope that with the rise in temperature and lowering of humidity, the number of cases will start coming down.

Walia said the government has adequate stock of medicine to offer treatment to swine flu patients.

The health minister asked the people to maintain high standard of personal hygiene to prevent the disease.

Spurt in cases of Seasonal Influenza in Delhi

Various sub types of Seasonal Influenza virus are circulating and causing the present spurt in cases in the States of Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana and Punjab. Notable among them is Influenza A H1N1 virus that caused the Pandemic in 2009.

Following reports appearing in certain sections of the media, it is reiterated that Seasonal Influenza is spread from human to human by droplets generated by a patient during coughing, sneezing etc. There is no role of pigs or poultry in causing such episodes of Seasonal Influenza. Accordingly simple public health measures like frequent hand wash, covering nose and mouth with tissue paper or handkerchief, avoiding crowded places are appropriate preventive measures for this disease.

Most of the cases are mild and requires only symptomatic treatment. However, self-recognition of symptoms of fever, cough, body ache etc. and early reporting to an identified hospital is crucial in getting appropriate medical advice. This is more so important for people in extremes of age, pregnant women, people with co morbid conditions such as diabetes, lung diseases, heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, blood disorders, diabetes, neurological disorders, immune-compromised patients, those on long term corticosteroid therapy, cancer and HIV/AIDS. Also, if these categories of people come in contact with a diagnosed case of Seasonal Influenza, they are advised to take Oseltamivir drug as prophylaxis.

Adequate stock of the drug Oseltamivir is available with all the State Government identified hospitals. A central Stockpile is also maintained. Its retail sale is restricted as indiscriminate use would lead to development of resistance (to the only available drug).

As we are in the midst of the outbreak, vaccination as a public health intervention is not recommended at this stage.

Swine flu kills two more in Delhi, 58 more tested positive

New Delhi: Two people suffering from swine flu died in the national capital on Friday while 58 tested positive for the Influenza A (H1N1) virus, taking the total number of cases to 301 since January, an official said.

"Fifty-eight people have tested positive for swine flu. One death was reported from Apollo Hospital and another from Jaipur Golden Hospital," a Delhi Health Service doctor told IANS.

Doctors said there has been a sudden spurt in swine flu cases.

This month, the virus infected 262 people, of which six have died. In January, 39 cases were reported and one succumbed to the virus.

According to the Delhi government, 78 swine flu cases and one death was reported in 2012.

"Symptoms of the flu are unrelenting high fever and sudden breathlessness," said Suranjit Chatterjee, internal medicine consultant at Apollo Hospital.
