First case of dengue fever in NT for 70 years

The Northern Territory Health Department says the Territory's first case of dengue fever in 70 years is a complete mystery.

The department says the mosquito that carries dengue fever does not exist in the Territory.

It is therefore at a loss to explain how a man who did not travel outside of the Territory contracted the virus.

Dr Vicki Krause from the Centre for Disease Control says her only explanation is a dengue mosquito may have come into the Territory by ship or cargo.

"At this time we do not think that this is a risk to the public; that it does appear to be a one-off case," she said.

Authorities step up dengue outbreak measures

The Queensland Government has joined forces with the Townsville City Council to prevent a repeat of last year's dengue outbreak in the state's north.

More than 1,000 cases of dengue fever were recorded across north Queensland in 2009 and for the first time there was also an outbreak of the disease during this year's winter months.

As part of control measures, dengue patrol teams will check more than 3,500 homes in six Townsville suburbs.

Councillor Dale Last says it is the largest suburban inspection of its kind in Australia.

"The last thing we want in this community is another outbreak of dengue - it's hard to control when you do get an outbreak," he said.

More dengue cases confirmed in Townsville

Townsville City Council (TCC) says there have been another 24 confirmed cases of dengue fever in the north Queensland city since three cases were reported in October.
