Ecuador recorded a high increase of dengue cases so far this year compared to what accounted for the same period in 2009.

Dengue has affected several Latin American countries like El Salvador.

Health Undersecretary Costa Island, Marcelo Aguilar, told BBC News that so far have been treated in the country, especially in the coastal provinces, 3985 cases of dengue fever, which is 3.5 times more than detected in the first 10 weeks last year.
This is in addition 78 cases of DHF, a more lethal variety of the disease recorded this year.

Undersecretary Aguilar stated that only one death due to dengue have been confirmed in the country, adding that the Ministry of Health works to prevent high mortality rates due to the mosquito Aedes aegypti, Transmitter of the disease. To tell the official, health actions to combat mosquito could be extended until June.

The increase in the number of dengue cases has been produced, according to Aguilar, the term "climate anomalies" that have affected coastal areas of Ecuador, such as a temperature increase of up to three degrees above normal levels and high humidity, "This creates excellent conditions for mosquito reproduction.

The proliferation of Aedes aegyptiHas also been facilitated by poor sanitary conditions in various parts of the country.

"Problems in the garbage collection and water management and lack of basic infrastructure, create permanent conditions for outbreaks of dengue," said Aguilar.

A problem for Latin America
The secretary stressed that dengue is a problem that affects not only Ecuador but also to various countries in Latin America.

If we were not prepared to face this disease, they might have killed many who were infected with dengue hemorrhagic

"In the region have occurred in this year 2 million cases last year when it registered about a million. That is why we say that dengue is a threat to Latin America," he said Aguilar.

In the same sense spoke days ago Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa, who said that Ecuador is a country "quite successful in combating dengue and other diseases."

Besides Ecuador, dengue has strongly affected South American countries like Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Colombia.

Public health problems
The province of El Oro in Ecuador's southern coast, has been the most affected by the presence of dengue in the country.

In that province, which borders Peru recorded until 2042 when cases of classical dengue and 46 of dengue hemorrhagic fever, and hence the health authorities conducted sweeps through epidemiological spraying to help counter the mosquito that transmits the disease.

The Hospital Director Teofilo Davila, chief of the province, Jose Ojeda, he told BBC News that the high incidence of dengue in El Oro is related to public health problems and lack of health education by the population .

"The cities, when grown with disorder, with the lack of basic services like water supply and garbage collection, and inadequate sewerage infrastructure are exposed to the proliferation of various diseases such as dengue," said manager.

Ojeda said the impact of dengue in the province is being offset by the action of institutions and community health.

"If we were not prepared to face this disease, they might have killed many who were infected with hemorrhagic dengue," he said.
