The death of a 4-year-old girl in southern Italy from suspected diphtheria has reopened Italy’s debate over vaccine refusal, while a parallel fight over childhood immunization is unfolding in the United States. Anna Rosa Bartolotta died Aug. 20 in Palermo, Sicily after doctors detected signs consistent with diphtheria, a disease now rare in industrialized countries because of routine vaccination. Italian authorities are awaiting final confirmation from the National Institute of Health, but prosecutors and health officials are already treating the case as a possible failure of vaccine protection.
What happened
The child had developed fever, vomiting and loss of appetite and was initially diagnosed with tonsillitis, according to Italian media reports. Her condition later worsened, and she was transferred to intensive care at the Di Cristina children’s hospital in Palermo, where doctors were unable to save her.
Health authorities launched an epidemiological investigation after her death. Rai reported Monday that about 10 relatives and close contacts had tested positive, while the girl’s family members were given antibiotic prophylaxis and her siblings were vaccinated after her death. A 4-year-old cousin also tested positive and was hospitalized in isolation, but his condition was improving; his parents said he had been vaccinated...

Prosecutors in Palermo have placed Anna Rosa’s parents under investigation for negligent homicide by omission, according to ANSA and Rai. Investigators are examining whether the decision not to vaccinate the girl contributed to her death.
