.....(b) Apprehension, detention, or conditional release of individuals
Regulations prescribed under this section shall not provide for the apprehension, detention, or conditional release of individuals except for the purpose of preventing the introduction, transmission, or spread of such communicable diseases as may be specified from time to time in Executive orders of the President upon the recommendation of the Secretary, in consultation with the Surgeon General,1.

.....(d) Apprehension and examination of persons reasonably believed to be infected
(1) Regulations prescribed under this section may provide for the apprehension and examination of any individual reasonably believed to be infected with a communicable disease in a qualifying stage and (A) to be moving or about to move from a State to another State; or (B) to be a probable source of infection to individuals who, while infected with such disease in a qualifying stage, will be moving from a State to another State. Such regulations may provide that if upon examination any such individual is found to be infected, he may be detained for such time and in such manner as may be reasonably necessary. For purposes of this subsection, the term ?State? includes, in addition to the several States, only the District of Columbia.

(2) For purposes of this subsection, the term ?qualifying stage?, with respect to a communicable disease, means that such disease?

(A) is in a communicable stage; or

(B) is in a precommunicable stage, if the disease would be likely to cause a public health emergency if transmitted to other individuals.

I'm sorry, though I have mixed feelings about its actual administration, the legal ability for authorities to forcibly isolate patients suspected of having deadly contagious diseases is about 10,000,000 miles away from actual, real-life "martial law."

Zerohedge really likes to hyperventilate.

As they say, "On a long enough timeline, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero". Who can argue with that! My job (and probably the job of most of us here) is to make the timeline as long as possible.

Zero Hedge doesn?t count as a legitimate news source. Perhaps Tyler Durden, the author of the Zero Hedge piece, would have benefited from reading Sharon?s and AlaskaDenise?s posts above before writing his piece.

Sensationalism is not news. Lack of knowledge is dangerous when it comes to Ebola. As readers here know there is no vaccine for Ebola. Perhaps Durden should have dome a little more homework.

Durden states

I think that some of that is inevitable during a major event like this, honestly. I think that for the most part, I've seen any things that are fairly unreasonable or seem questionable be addressed fairly quickly, or sometimes politely sort of talked around.

I certainly hope to contribute something positive, though I am not in HC either, my education is more in _ecology_, of all things, with a big dash of sociology. This actually leads, odd as it may sound, to a natural interest in public health, so I've learned a lot on my own there.

We all have different backgrounds to bring to the table, I would just hope that most of it can stay more informed than what often shows up in various popular sites. Unless we're commenting on the public reaction, of course, which is also important to notice.

Shunting stuff like that to discussion is probably the best that can be done, for now. This is a huge global story, so this site is bound to attract a lot of levels and breadths of comment it hasn't had as much before (or maybe has, but I've missed them.)

There is a lot of posting latitude in threads here in the Discussion Forum. Levity is encouraged and needed. This Ebola epidemic is going to last for months. Everyone needs to adjust to this crisis in their own personal way.

Absolutely no apology needed! As Al said, lightness of being is not a bad thing.

Also, I have never gotten the impression that this is a site for only health care workers to post. (Those type sites are usually password protected.) I have found this to be an egalitarian group. No credentials are touted or demanded and no medical advice is given.

As for Zero Hedge, that appears to be a financial blog with a strong bearish slant. I've never looked for ebola news there and wouldn't be as concerned about factual errors there as I would in MSM or science blogs. That is where errors are troubling.

I think what made Zero Hedge a lot of (powerful) enemies is not what they got wrong, but what they got right about that high frequency trading scheme:

I spend a lot of time on economics discussion sites and groups, and tend to use Zero Hedge as a 'data' point for the Oh S4!t end of the awareness spectrum. And there is sometimes useful information posted by the very active commentariat there, if you have time to skim through the obvious nutjob postings, and cross check the info.

The people who are willing to learn and to engage in reasonable conversation tend to stay, and do so. The others leave pretty quickly. I don't want to discourage anyone who has been misled by social media but is willing to be put right. There are many people here not directly involved in health care, but who are knowledgeable and can discuss things intelligently.
