Discussion thread IV - COVID-19 (new coronavirus)

https://www.taiwannews.com.tw/en/news/3910853

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan's Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) head on Sunday (April 5) demonstrated how to disinfect a used mask with a rice cooker.

As surgical face masks are still in short supply despite a massive ramp-up in production, Health minister and CECC head Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) during a press conference on Sunday, demonstrated how to use a rice cooker to disinfect a mask for reuse. During a light-hearted presentation, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Director-General Wu Shou-mei (吳秀梅) talked Chen through the simple steps of using a rice cooker to dry heat a mask to kill bacteria and viruses after use.

In the video, Wu directs Chen to place the metal rack at the bottom of the cooker. However, Chen accidentally places it in the bottom of the metal pot, prompting her to joke "the minister has never cooked rice before."

The room then erupts with laughter as Chen grins and shakes his head out of embarrassment. Wu then asks Chen to place the metal rack inside the cooker first, followed by the metal pot.

She then asks Chen to place a mask inside the metal pot and cover it with the cooker's lid. Wu quips that users must remember to plug in the rice cooker, inducing more laughs from the audience.

Next, she asks Chen to press the "cook" button on the device. However, Chen struggles mightily to locate the proper button, before being guided by Wu to the correct lever.

A light switches on indicating that the device is starting to cook the contents inside. Wu explains that after three minutes, the button will pop back up, meaning that it has finished its cooking cycle.

However, she advises users to allow the mask to continue to sit inside for another five minutes. She said that after that five-minute wait is over, the mask should be successfully disinfected.

Also in the video, she advises the public not to place water inside the cooker as would normally be the case when making rice and steaming foods as it will damage the mask. She reiterates that spraying disinfectant on the masks is a less desirable method than using a rice cooker because it could damage its electrostatic layer.

Wu states that a surgical face mask could be disinfected with the rice cooker method she demonstrated "four or five times." According to Wu, research on the procedure carried out by the FDA has found that the bacterial filtration efficiency (BFE) of the masks can be maintained at a level of 99 percent when dry heating the masks in this way, even after five times.

More info from above link ... " Lai said that certified surgical masks when new usually only have a filtering effectiveness rate of 80 percent, but with this method, the masks can be sterilized up to five times and still achieve a filtering effectiveness rate of 70 percent.

As for spraying the masks with alcohol or bleach, can damage their material and weaken their filtration capabilities. Lai said that spraying a surgical mask just once with alcohol or bleach can reduce its filtering capabilities by 50 percent, reported UDN.

In response to internet rumors that masks can be sterilized with hairdryers, Lai said that this method has not yet been tested. He said he does not recommend it because the sterilization effect achieved through using a hairdryer may be uneven"

A note: You are going to see slight variations in case, death, hospitalization counts. Govs tend to report once a day. Some media update continuously. These small differences are not significant.

What you want to look for is the overall trend over several days.

The report above gives the false impression that this pandemic will simply end one day. Bingo - no more COVID-19. Go back to your normal life.

This will not happen. This disease is endemic in humans now. It will ebb and flow through the world's populations until we achieve global herd immunity - or a safe and efficient vaccine is developed.

Expect various life disruptions for a year.

Report: Wuhan Funeral Homes Burned Coronavirus Victims Alive
Virginia Mayo/AP
7 Apr 2020105:38
Locals in Wuhan, where the Chinese coronavirus pandemic originated, have heard screams coming from funeral home furnaces, and some treated in hospitals say they saw workers put living coronavirus patients in body bags, Radio Free Asia (RFA) reported on Monday.

RFA noted that it could not independently verify that the Chinese Communist Party was burning coronavirus patients alive, nor has the Communist Party confirmed or denied the rumors. Yet the rumors persist that, to make room for new patients in Wuhan’s overcrowded hospitals, medical staff chose older patients less likely to survive the infection and shipped them to incinerators while they were still alive and conscious...:( https://www.inquisitr.com/5985896/wu...-burned-alive/

Hello Sharon and friends, I am a psychiatrist, with decades of experience dealing with existential threat as well as the ordinary horrors of life. I tried to join the Melissa Hein Forum and the web site did not allow me to subscribe. So, I would like to subscribe, and then see what happens. Sometimes I write best when it is to a person with a singular question. If people pose questions on the Forum, I'd be happy to chime in. I feel that it is important to keep the reality of this catastrophe personal, with heart. Stalin is alleged to have said, "“If only one man dies of hunger, that is a tragedy. If millions die, that’s only statistics.” I see one aspect of my job is to be constantly open to tragedy, not to develop psychic numbing or indifference. Please let me know if there is a way to open this up.

Sorry, for personal mental health, I haven’t been putting that much time into reading deeply into the FT posts. So likely this is dealt with elsewhere.

Press has been relying on IHME estimates, recently for Ireland https://www.irishtimes.com/news/ire...g-gardaí-powers-to-enforce-lockdown-1.4223043 and with comments about the US. As well, there’s a lot of hostile discussion on a Facebook group about the Tour Divide, which is an ultra-distance bicycle event from Banff to Antelope Wells New Mexico. Some, like me, think it’s foolish to start the trip, typically in June, and unwanted by the small communities, border rules, etc. Others are pointing to IHME estimates in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico to argue that fatal peaks will be rescued very soon and projections end the outbreak by July anyway (so just delay the start). I think that is bunk - loca (Manitoba) experts are talking about no real end to severe restriction until a vaccine arrives 12-18 months away.

But the real question is what’s the reliability assessment of IHME’s projections? Do they make sense, are they skewed by lack of data, or are they influenced by wishful thinking politics?

Thanks,

J.

I think they are only projecting this current wave. I do not think they are modeling for the fall yet. It is foolhardy for anyone to think that COVID-19 will "go away" this summer. It will still be circulating but the heat in the northern hemisphere may tap down some of the environmental contamination aspects. This is going to be a year long situation (at least) until the global herd immunity reaches a level where the disease can not get a lot of traction to spread. Or we get a safe and effective vaccine.

Sadly I think Sharon is right. One point that may help HCWs and other high risk individuals is plasma. Herd immunity is not going to saves us anytime soon as our one million or so cases is 0.01% of the population in 3 months. That means years at this level to get anywhere near herd immunity even as a breaking effect. I think outcomes may be much better once we get reliable large scale trial data. Combination therapy with a mix of timed immune suppressants looks promising. Serology data should become available soon and we might get lucky and find there have been more asymptomatic cases than we thought.

I saw that one too but I do not think it is a significant factor. In seasonal flu bacterial infections come late in disease progression and causes secondary pneumonia. SARS-2 is killing the alveolar epithelial cells which leads to primary pneumonia allowing body fluids into the lung. The damage caused leads to a cytokine storm that calls in a host of immune cells that then do more damage. The body tries to patch the leaks with fibroid cells but these block oxygen diffusion. It is the combined triple effect that is making this so nasty. The bacterial co-infections are too slow at getting going. One NY ICU doctor said they seem to be running at ~2% but that they were not a big factor.

We are asking all of followers who are religious to please not go to Easter Sunday services in person.

Please attend a virtual service online.

Social distancing of 6 feet is not enough if someone has a cough.

Singing can spread disease.

Please.

Remember it's not over until Brunhilda sings. Don't put down unrefundable deposits until that happens. IHME is a reputable group founded by the Gates Foundation. They won't sell the pandemic short, but when data changes, so will projections.
