Dengue cases rise, mortality rate not a high

Santo Domingo.- Patients hospitalized with dengue have increased at Reid Cabral Children's Hospital in recent weeks, closing July with around 100 admissions, 40 more than June?s 60 cases .

The figure was revealed yesterday by the hospital director Emilio Mena Castro, who said dengue cases have been rising at Reid Cabral in the last two months. "We?ve noticed an increase in the last two months with regard to the pattern that was prevailing during the year."

Dengue Causes 45 Deaths in Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo, Oct 9 (Prensa Latina) Dengue affected
6 999 people during the 2012 in the Dominican Republic and caused the death of 45, reported today Deputy Health Minister Rafael Schiffino.

According to the official, in the last four weeks there have been 340 cases and two deaths, and from 2010 to the current date those numbers are located on 27 000 721 and 412, respectively.

58 people die from leptospirosis and 47 from cholera

SANTO DOMINGO. After the rainy season, increased deaths and cases of leptospirosis, cholera and dengue with 58, 47 and 28 deaths respectively.
The data is contained in EW covering number 43 until last October, so that cases of deaths could be higher, because the newsletter does not include deaths from suspected cholera a boy and a girl dengue, reported in the Luis Eduardo Aybar Hospital and Moca.

These diseases continue in epidemic area nationwide.

Leptospirosis

In this week reported 11 suspected cases of leptospirosis. From January to October this year, authorities have reported 944 suspected cases, including 58 deaths.

Cholera

On cholera, the system notified the affected add 31, of whom 19 were hospitalized. The total is 6.246 Suspected cases so far in 2012. In the case of dengue, the average number of cases per week is 372 and the total accumulated cases per year is 6.001. The provinces with the highest number of cases are Santo Domingo and the National District, San Cristóbal and Montecristi.

Health officials say they maintain surveillance to keep under control these and other diseases.

Malaria is one of the endemic under surveillance. According to official figures, in week 43 were eight new cases of malaria in the country, all indigenous.

The province is in Dajabón yellow alert for filing of 1-10 cases per thousand native inhabitants. Azua, La Vega, San Juan de la Maguana and Santo Domingo are in green alert.

The cumulative total this year is 816 cases and 10 deaths. The number of affected represents a 36% reduction in the incidence, compared with the same period last year.
