CONGO: Cholera "continues spreading"

BRAZZAVILLE, 21 February 2012 (IRIN) - Health authorities in the Republic of Congo have recorded 340 cases of cholera, nine of them fatal, since June 2011, in the northern district of Likouala, and have warned that the disease continues to spread and that some health centres lack sufficient treatment.

?Some deaths have not been taken into account because the [deceased?s] families have not reported them,? said Jean Martin Mabiala, the doctor in charge of health services in the district, adding that there were other suspected cases that had not been confirmed because of the remoteness of their locations.

He said the crew of a river boat from the Central African Republic had buried two people suspected to have died of cholera in early February.

● PERSISTENCE OF CHOLERA IN DRC
▫ Lower Congo: further epidemic spread in new areas of health (Boma and Boma-Bungu), in addition to areas already epidemic (Muanda and Kitona). In Boma-Bungu, 15 new cases were registered against two suspects in Boma. The cumulative total of the week 4 to week 10 is 283 cases with 8 deaths (CFR 2.82%);
▫ City-Province of Kinshasa: 29 new cases notifi ed during the 10 weeks in several health zones (ZS) including 7 Maluku I, 5 to Kikimi, 4 to Masina II, 2 to Limete 1 to Kingabwa, Masina 1 to 9 and in other areas of health, making a cumulative total of 285 cases with 8 deaths (CFR 2.80%) from week 1 to week 10;
▫ North Kivu: 128 new cases with 2 deaths were noted during week 10 in the Eastern Province of the DRC. The Goma with these two health zones (Goma and Karisimbi) reported 36 cases, against 60 cases in week 9. The number of new cases is down to Goma, the provincial capital. By cons, the number of cases is rising to the areas of health Kirotshe (46 cases) and Mutwanga (31 cases). From week 1 to week 10, the North Kivu has already notified 1,662 cases ed with 17 deaths (CFR:

Alarming increase of cholera in the DRC: the statistics of the first quarter approaching 40% of total cases registered in 2011.
Cholera remains a major health concern in all provinces of the Republic
Congo, with the exception of the two Kasai provinces. Trends suggest that if answers are not to scale implemented in the coming weeks, the situation may be more dramatic than in 2011.

According to statistics compiled by the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO), 8144 cases including 120 deaths were recorded from 1 January to 27 March 2012, representing nearly 40% of
total cases registered in 2012. 6794 cases including 77 deaths were recorded in the eastern provinces of countries, suffering from chronic disease. These figures represent half of all cases reported in Katanga, Maniema, North Kivu, South Kivu and the Ituri district in 2011. The Province of South Kivu remains the most affected with 2,214 cases including 14 deaths since the beginning of the year.

In the provinces along the Congo River that are hit by the epidemic, Bandundu Province is the most affected with 528 cases including 16 deaths, followed by the Lower Congo with 379 cases including 8 deaths and the City of Kinshasa with 367 cases including 10 deaths.

Access to safe water and poor hygiene and sanitation remain major causes of the epidemic.

CONGO: Cholera hits munitions blast displaced

BRAZZAVILLE, 2 April 2012 (IRIN) - A cholera outbreak is adding to the woes of thousands of people displaced by a huge munitions blast in the Congolese capital Brazzaville about a month ago, say officials.

?We have 10 confirmed cases of cholera,? Youssouf Gamati?, the UN World Health Organization?s representative in Congo, told IRIN.

Poor hygiene and sanitation conditions in the sites for the displaced as well as ongoing rains have helped spread the disease, which is affecting all age groups, added Gamati?.

Despite recent gains in the fight against cholera, progress rates indicate that the disease could be deadlier this year than in 2011. As of 21 April, a total of 11,221cholera cases with 222 deaths have been recorded by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the DRC Ministry of Health. This number represents nearly 52 percent of the 21,692 recorded cases in 2011. Since the cholera outbreak was declared in March 2011 in Province Orientale and later spread along the Congo River to Bandundu, Equateur and Kinshasa provinces, the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) has already allocated USD 13.1 million to reinforce the response, including $9.1 million since January 2012. Limited access to clean drinking water, especially in rural areas, and hygiene and sanitation problems in urban areas are the main drivers of the epidemic. Cholera persists in all provinces, except for Kasai Occidental and Kasai Oriental.
