Kwilu: nearly 90 cases of human African trypanosomiasis identified in 9 months

Eighty-eight cases of human African trypanosomiasis, otherwise known as "sleeping sickness" , have been recorded for the first three quarters of the current year. The provincial coordinating doctor of the national human African trypanosomiasis control program (PNLTHA) in Kwilu, Dr Pathou Nganzobo, announced this on Monday 7 November in Bandundu.
Dr Pathou Nganzobo published these data, on the occasion of a round table organized on political advocacy for the elimination of sleeping sickness in the DRC by 2030.
According to him, 15 health zones are affected out of the 24 in this province.
Dr Pathou Nganzobo talks about the difficulties encountered in the fight against this disease and also announces the inclusion of a budget line of 9 million Congolese francs (4,500 USD) by the provincial government of Kwilu for the momentum of the elimination trypanosomiasis:
''We mainly came up against the problem of funding. We were in a project with IMT Invers and the Liverpool Tropical Medicine System, which ended on December 31, 2021. So the time to renew the project, we spent almost a whole quarter without activity, it is a great difficulty for us. Now the provincial government has pledged 9 million Congolese francs for the impetus for the elimination of sleeping sickness already included in the budget proposal that it will submit to the provincial assembly. The main focus will be on raising awareness.
Dr. Pathou Nganzobo invites the population to know that trypanosomiasis really exists and asks them to contribute in the fight; in particular by cleaning up the environment and by taking part in screening.
