Nepal earthquake: More than 100 dead, many injured

More than 100 people are known to have died in a powerful earthquake that struck Nepal, wrecking many historic buildings, officials have said.

The quake measured 7.9 and struck an area between the capital Kathmandu and the city of Pokhara, the US Geological Survey said.

Tremors were felt across the region, as far afield as Pakistan, Bangladesh and neighbouring India.

A Nepali minister said there had been "massive damage" at the epicentre...

Update 10:59 UTC : 6 people are now reported killed on the Everest (avalanches). Avalanches and landslides will cause many deaths elsewhere in Nepal but nothing is known so far.

Update 10:40 UTC : New fatalities number as reported by REUTERS (we could not get a confirmation elsewhere of this number) : 449 fatalities alone in Nepal so far. To be added 29 from Bangladesh, China and India ? preliminary total : 478 Sad!

A shallow earthquake measuring 7.9 magnitude struck west of the ancient Nepali capital of Kathmandu on Saturday causing buildings to collapse, injuring many and leaving a pall of dust over the city, witnesses said.

The death toll has risen to 618 as Kathmandu's decrepit buildings, crisscrossed by narrow alleys, are home to large families. A 1934 quake of magnitude 8.3 in the impoverished Himalayan nation killed over 8,500 people.

Nepal Terrorized by Aftershocks That Stymie Relief Efforts

KATMANDU, Nepal ? A growing sense of despair spread through Katmandu on Sunday as the devastated Nepali capital was convulsed by aftershocks that sent residents screaming into the streets, where they were pelted by heavy rain.

A day after an earthquake killed more than 2,400 people and injured about 5,900, residents grew frantic and the government, entirely overwhelmed by the enormousness of the challenge facing the country, struggled to provide relief, or much hope.

It is increasingly evident that authorities here were ill-equipped to rescue those trapped and would have trouble maintaining adequate supplies of water, electricity and food.

Thousands of Katmandu?s residents squatted on streets throughout the city either because their homes were destroyed or continued aftershocks, including one of magnitude 6.7, left them too afraid to go back inside. Following a 7.9 earthquake on April 25, Nepal has experienced numerous aftershocks, including a 6.7 earthquake at around 1 pm local time on April 26.

Cell phone and internet service continue to be intermittent. Many roads are crowded with people and transportation is difficult. Many buildings have been damaged, and many other buildings (including one major hospital) have been evacuated due to structural integrity issues. If you are in a safe location, please shelter in place. U.S. citizens are advised to avoid large crowds. Embassy personnel are present at both the Embassy (in the Maharajgunj neighborhood) and at the alternate command post at the “Phora Durbar” American Club in Central Kathmandu (near the Thamel neighborhood, which is popular among backpackers). Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport temporarily suspended operations after the April 25 earthquake and the major aftershock on April 26, but has since resumed operations. Travelers are encouraged to check with their airline to confirm flight status. The earthquake and aftershocks have also triggered avalanches that have impacted the area near Everest Base Camp, resulting in many deaths and missing persons. Anyone looking for a U.S. citizen can write to NepalEmergencyUSC@state.gov. Please include your name, contact information and relation to the U.S. citizen you are seeking, as well as the full name, date of birth, passport number (if known) and last known location of the U.S. citizen. The Embassy will provide additional updates when possible.

Nepal's hospitals swamped as quake toll passes 2,400, thousands injured

(Reuters) - Overwhelmed doctors moved hundreds of patients onto the streets of Nepal's capital on Sunday when aftershocks rattled hospitals and buildings already damaged by an earthquake that killed more than 2,400 people and devastated Kathmandu valley.

Sick and wounded people lay on a dusty road outside Kathmandu Medical College while hospital workers carried more patients out of the building on stretchers and sacks.

The U.N. children's agency, UNICEF, says nearly 1 million children in Nepal need help. UNICEF says it is preparing two cargo flights with a combined 120 tons of humanitarian supplies including medical and hospital supplies, tents and blankets, for urgent airlift to Kathmandu.

Many are feared trapped under rubble and the number of casualties is expected to rise. At least 15 aftershocks, ranging from magnitude 5 to 6.6, caused further damage to buildings and increased the risk of collapse. Tremors were felt as far away as Lahore in Pakistan, Lhasa in Tibet, and in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

?We are extremely concerned about the fate of communities in towns and villages in rural areas closer to the epicenter,? said Jagan Chapagain, the IFRC?s Director for Asia Pacific. ?Access roads have been damaged or blocked by landslides and communications lines are down, preventing us from reaching local Red Cross branches to get accurate information. We anticipate that there will be considerable destruction and loss of life.?

More than six million people live within 60 miles of the epicenter, located some 50 miles northwest of the densely populated capital Katmandu which itself has a population of 2.5 million. Buildings and infrastructure have been damaged and destroyed. Electricity and telephone connectivity is intermittent and mobile services are experiencing heavy congestion. Hospitals continue to function but are stretched to the limits.

Experts had warned for decades that Nepal was vulnerable to a killer quake

A massive block of Earth?s crust, roughly 75 miles long and 37 miles wide, lurched 10 feet to the south Saturday over the course of 30 seconds. Riding atop this block of the planet was the capital of Nepal ? Kathmandu ? and millions of Nepalese.

That?s the description of Saturday?s earthquake from University of Colorado geologist Roger Bilham, a world-renowned expert on Himalayan earthquakes...

The Indian plate is inexorably sliding, in a halting, ground-shaking fashion, northward, beneath the much larger Eurasian plate. The process has created the lofty Tibetan plateau and pushed up mountains that reach nearly 30,000 feet above sea level. The Himalaya front can produce earthquakes that are much more powerful than the one on Saturday ? such as the 8.2-magnitude earthquake that hit Nepal in 1934.

But this one was relatively shallow, which intensifies the surface shaking, and its epicenter was closer to Kathmandu than the 1934 temblor.

?The earthquake ruptured under the city, very close to the city, so this is as bad as our worst-case scenario, probably,? Bilham said.

Villages Near Nepal Earthquake?s Epicenter Are Desperate as Death Toll Tops 3,800

SAURPANI, Nepal ? Residents of remote mountain villages at the epicenter of Nepal?s powerful earthquake said on Monday that they were running out of food, and that two days after the quake they had seen no sign of outside assistance.

?We have no shelter, no food and all the bodies are scattered around,? said Parbati Dhakal, a woman from Saurpani, an ethnic Gurka village at the quake?s center, about 50 miles northwest of the capital, Katmandu.

Villagers described a landscape of destruction. There had been 1,300 houses in Saurpani, but one resident, Shankar Thapa, said, ?All the houses collapsed.?

On Monday night, Nepalese authorities raised the death toll to more than 3,800, but the full extent of the casualties and the damage was still unknown.

The magnitude-7.8 earthquake shook a vast portion of central Nepal on Saturday, from Mount Everest to Katmandu and points west. But as rescue teams began to arrive from around the world, much of the stricken area remained inaccessible, locked in mountainous terrain with some roads blocked by landslides.

Nepal: Eight million hit by quake as PM says up to 10,000 may have died

Eight million people have been affected by Nepal’s devastating earthquake.

So says the United Nations, as more bodies are pulled from the rubble.

Up to 10,000 may have died according to the country’s Prime Minister Sushil Koirala who has ordered intensified rescue efforts and appealed for foreign supplies of tents and medicines.

Officially, 4,349 deaths have been confirmed but figures are expected to rise as the scale of damage in remote rural areas becomes clearer, with many isolated villages thought to have been totally flattened.

If the death toll does reach 10,000, that would be even higher than the 8,500 killed in a massive 1934 quake, the Himalayan nation’s worst disaster to date.

International aid has finally started getting through but distribution is slow.
